    Electrical to shed questions

if you run one circuit you dont need a subpanel, disconnect (unless local code says otherwise) or ground rod. Personally I would run THWN wire in PVC conduit, but you can use type UF direct burial cable. Dont put romex (NM-B) underground, in conduit or not.

How many volts at the outlet?

the nominal voltage in the usa is 120/240. thats why its called 240, not 220. your voltage is a little high which is why your halogen lights are eating bulbs. Buy 130v lamps for it and that problem should go away. What size circuit does the compressor say its supposed to have? Is there any...

How many volts at the outlet?

its 240 not 220. the current does not flow out the ground, it flows between the two hots. Put your meter between the two hots and see what you get.

200 amp panel with 100 amp main?

yeah, but i wouldnt expect a high level of service for one panel to a homeowner and considering he has to cut corners and not upgrade the service for financial reasons a $400 special order panel is out of the question.

200 amp panel with 100 amp main?

this is a commodity panel being installed on a house, not switchgear for an office building. hardly warrants a call to their sales division.

200 amp panel with 100 amp main?

install a big new (42 sp or whatever) 200A main breaker panel. Install a 2P 100a branch breaker with a hold down clip. Use this as your main until you do your upgrade. (my response based on usa -i dont know how canada works) there are also main lug panels that are convertable to main breaker...

3 in 1 switch wiring help

here's what I would do. Run some flex or smurf tube if allowed w/ 4 wires plus ground from the switch box up to a jbox in the attic (or use some 14-2-2 if you can get ahold of it). these wires will give power to the switch and return 3 switch legs. You will bring power into this jbox on a 14/2...

wait, you have loose individual wires to a hot tub subpanel? can we see some pics of that?

3 in 1 switch wiring help

do you have a basement below or attic above this? you can have individual conductors in conduit of course, but you cant just run some wires which is what it sounded like you were talking about. You also cant run an additional cable to get one more wire.

Does anyone de-bounce their contactor coil's?

and contacts inside vessels full of SF6 for high voltage. Those (i forget what its called) are able to keep the circuit off long enough to open a mechanical switch.

Does anyone de-bounce their contactor coil's?

i think it comes down to timing. if you (with a high speed camera for example) can find the point at which the arc breaks for a given current and voltage you could in theory release the coil at the appropriate time to reach that arc point break close to the zero crossing. I bet repeatability...

Does anyone de-bounce their contactor coil's?

i wonder if you could determine the time it takes the contactor to open, then release the coil at the appropriate place in the AC waveform so the contacts seperate as close as possible to the zero crossing. it would be interesting to see if thats been done. At that point i think you would just...

Does anyone de-bounce their contactor coil's?

switch bounce is an issue in digital circuits and i dont think it is slow enough to affect operation of a contactor. Furthermore your capacitor isnt going to store enough energy to affect operation of the coil. The contacts are going to arc under load no matter what you do to the circuit...

Wiring Nema 6-50 outlet with switch?

youre going to need an enclosure for the contactor, which will be as big as or bigger than the disconnect box you dont want. And its going to cost you ~$100. Just use the breaker (if the breaker says SWD on it, its rated for switch duty) when it wears out replace it. If it dies every 2 years you...

Use ground wire in romex as a neutral?

is there a box behind the floor controller with room for a small relay? I am bringing this up for discussion only and am not telling you to do this. Powering the coil of a relay from the load side of the controller gfci would be ok and not trip the gfci. wiring the contacts of the relay to the...

3 in 1 switch wiring help

you cant just run 2 more wires, nor can you run an additional cable to get one more wire. All the circuit conductors have to be in the same cable. what else is in the box where the switch goes? Where is the GFCI protecting this?
