    Bonding gas line question.

the gas pipe needs to be at the same potential as the rest of the electrical system and bonded components. Sticking a metal rod in the soil doesnt accomplish this -the gas line needs to be bonded to the electrical system's ground.

    wire size

when using bigger wire and a smaller breaker (60a breaker on #2 wire or whatever) you have to keep an eye on the size of the EGC as it must be proportionally increased when compared to the other conductors, and at some ampacities and wire size combinations, it doesnt calculate out correctly.

    Electrical Dilemna

two issues exist. 1st, something is contacting the metal case of the drill press causing it to be energized. 2nd, there is no return path for fault current. The case of the drill press is not bonded (grounded). This could either be at the drill press itself, or further upstream.

How do I protect a branch circuit - no panel access

doesnt matter. if its commercial you have to consider 180va per receptacle. (then again this is an illegal bootleg job so i guess that doesnt matter)

How do I protect a branch circuit - no panel access

your addition is going to overload the existing circuit. 6 receptacles x 180va per = 1080va plus another what 600va for the new lighting? Dont make your proposed changes, run a new circuit.

Changeover from 3-way to 4-way switch

AND all conductors of the circuit must be in the same cable or conduit. So even if he got another romex ran, he couldnt use one wire in it for his 3rd wire. This is a good application for some sort of X10 thing.

How to find which nail shorted wires?

i would make them go back and pull out every single nail. You dont know if there are other nails that go through just the hot, could be fine now and could be a problem later. I would also be worried about a nicked wire burning through later.

Will this be economical or another nightmare?

commercial ballasts make more noise as they dont have as much filtering as residential grade. there are a couple different standards. where does one get these 'quality usa made ballasts' i dont think there are any. fed gov issued a buy american waiver for ballasts, and although i am aware of a...

    I am an electrical retard

my guess is a failed backstabbed receptacle. Get a non contact voltage detector. Turn the breaker off and note all receptacles that dont have power. Turn breaker on and see if any of those now have power. Mark the one(s) that now work, turn breaker back off, pull out each of these receptacles...

    AC or DC

you can run a wiper motor off a computer power supply. To use an old PC power supply jumper the green wire to black to make it turn on, and take 4 or 5 yellows and 4 or 5 blacks (check on the PCB inside the supply that the yellows you choose all go to the same place) yellow is 12v black is gnd.

made me a Nema 6-50 gang box for my welders:)

Do yourself a favor and replace those romex clamps with actual cord grips (you dont necessarily need the wire mesh type, but you do need proper cord grips. Also, did you bond the ground to the box or are you relying on the receptacles being attached to the box?

    Hot main = bad main?

put a multimeter across the breaker one pole at a time (one probe on line and one probe on load of the same pole) and see how much voltage drop your getting across the breaker. Do this to each pole and respond with the results. You shouldnt have that much temperature rise with <20 amps of load.
