What To Look For When Hiring A Structural Engineer?

When I started out we cut all our own rafters and built all our own trusses. I built many cathedral trusses. Them fancy store bought trusses weren't used much then. I don't believe you could do that these days.

What To Look For When Hiring A Structural Engineer?

Vaulting existing ceilings is no simple task. As a carpenter I know how I would do it. Getting it past the permitting process could be a different thing.

    Identifying mystery PVC pipe size

You would think something that old would be a metal pipe, not pvc. But I am just guessing. I live in the city but when I bought this place years ago there was a well here. The City made the previous owner cut the head off and fill the pipe with concrete before they would sign off on it.

Advice needed; considering having a house built

The lowest was a C/10. Then came the Custom/10. Then Cheyenne and Cheyenne Super. My 1972 Custom/10 had vinyl seats and floors, three on the tree and no power steering. I'm not sure which of those luxuries were removed to drop down to a C/10.

City garage construction - worth the risk?

I'm sure there are still parts of the city worth living in. My friend is a concrete contractor and he lives within the CHOP ZONE created on 38th and Chicago last summer. He couldn't give his house away now. Since the OP is from Maine I just hope he is careful about where he buys a house.

City garage construction - worth the risk?

I'm just west of there in a town named after a big lake. I did projects all over Minneapolistan for years. I did a lot at public housing projects and other city venues. I quit working there maybe 5-6 years ago. Way too much crime and vandalism. Add to that the endless **** the City made me go...

    Flea Market Haul

I have piles of old molds. Dad was a very avid reloader many years ago and as a kid I cast thousands of bullets, balls, minnies, etc. Most of what I have is Lyman.

    Steel or Fiberglass Entry Door

I'm kind of a dinosaur and prefer wood. Back in the 1970's I spent my days hanging doors from scratch. I doubt many people have the skills or tools for that anymore. I have had a few people ask me to replace old doors. Matching up the hinge mortises to old frames and planing a door to fit in an...

Mastering of Hackery - welding a SDS bit.

Re: Mastering of Hackery - welding a SDS bid. I have a selection of three foot long SDS Max bits that I needed over the years for a one shot deal. I never tried to weld one. I guess I have never checked but do they make bit extensions for those? As far as welding goes I guess you could give...
