    Caulking aggravation

If you put it on too thick it will shrink back as it dries. For big cracks, you should be using backer rod.

    Harbor Freight Coupon Thread

I get HF emails every other day it seems. There is a sheet of coupons in every Sunday paper and they mail a catalog every month. And then you have the HF Coupon Database

Mini split vs. through wall unit

The only thing I've ever seen fail on a window or through wall unit is the control switches, when they had mechanical rotary knobs, otherwise they run forever. Split systems and central air units? well you can google the millions of repair and help questions about them.

    GJ's view on HF Pricing?

I have learned to always check Amazon before buying anything over $15-20 at HF. I needed a ball joint press for a U-joint job. HF wanted something like $90 for the same kit I got on Amazon for $34. Same kit sold under 100 different names in the same blow molded case. Warranty? I have no idea...

    The Harbor Freight PASS/FAIL Thread...

Just checked the 20% coupon in the magazine/coupon book that comes in the mail. You're right, Central Machinery excluded. Guess that's the new policy going forward. Eventually everything in the store will be excluded.

    I hate shop-vacs

Another vote for the older Craftsmans. I have a 5 gal from the 80s and a much older 10 or 15 gal. Both very strong. The older one has the inlet on the top cover not the side. That lets me put a plastic garbage bag inside so I can tie it and remove it rather than having to dump it and get covered...

    Circuit breaker finder recommendation?

I created a rough sketch of the 3 floors in my house on the computer and put the breaker number at the outlet or light fixture location on the map. The sheet hangs in a plastic sleeve stuck with a magnet on the inside of the breaker panel door. Of course I don't even trust my own map without...

    Leveling out uneven concrete

You could use almost any cement to level it, even plaster. If you lay several beads of adhesive under the threshold, it won't matter if it cracks a bit, the adhesive will hold it all together. As far as screeds, rip some pine strips a bit oversize stick them to the floor with double sided tape...

Why do screwdriver makers always offer bottle openers?

It's all about the handle. My bottle opener is a 9/16" wrench with the open end cut and ground into a bottle opener I got as a gift. Of course I could twist the tops off my Yuenglings but I prefer to use the wrench.

The same 1/4" plugs we use on microphone and guitar cords today.

What do you personally use a speeder wrench for?

My 3/8" came with a Craftsman socket set I bought many years ago. I have always used it with a 6" extension to remove and install sparkplugs. After I spin them in I grab the horizontal bend in the bar to snug them, Never over tighten them that way.

    Painting welding table frame

I like to use Rustoleum self etching primer on bare metal, the rusty metal primer is good too but the self etch really bites into the surface. If you're using any rattle can paint, pay attention to the recoat times printed on the can. Usually top coat within one hour or after 24 hours. Rustoleum...

Is this a old land line connection?

I use the Leatherman in my pocket if I don't have the punchdown with me or I'm too lazy to go out to the truck and get it. Needle nose push down the wire and knife blade cuts it off. I still prefer 66 blocks over 110. Easier to put a buttset on, easier to find tracer tone and much sturdier than...

    floor unstable issue

There is a product called Dash Patch or generically "floor leveler", a fast drying plaster like material that is used to level dips in a floor. It is commonly used under vinyl sheet or vinyl tile. Also, installing a padding under the laminate would minimize your problem.

    Manly Writing Utensils

I have a few nice mechanical pencils but I really have no use for them. When I use a pencil, it is usually for marking wood or even metal for cutting. I have a few carpenter pencils but I like a fine sharp line so I use regular #2 pencils. The biggest consumer of pencils around here is my 6 year...
