picts of your in-floor heat set ups.

Everyone here talks about short life of a water heater due to cold temps, but my well water is also 50 degrees. If I take a shower and my wife takes a shower plus other people in the house that is 40 min of cold water entering the heater. Also we have a large tub with jets that takes 20 min to...

    Smoke/Heat/CO Detectors in the Garage/Shop

If you are close to a manned fire dept then get an alarm system that calls the FD automatically. If you have a volunteer FD, they will not get there in time to save the building. In about 10 min your whole thing will be a loose. In which case open the doors so it burns faster as a total lose...

What did you do "IN" your garage today?

Took a HF ammo box and made a removable tool box for my tractor.

BRAND NEW (to me) SHOP! Need advice on what to do BEFORE I move in..

Get graph paper and do some layouts or draw a floor plan on CAD (Sketchup). Only you can figure what you need. Suggestions: Do any floor work or paint. Maybe add electric (I have 34 outlets on 4 circuits in a smaller space then you) Plan where a compressor, sink, shelves will go in the future...

Attaching christmas lights with screened gutter guards

I put up aluminum finish nails on my facia ust below the gutter. They stick out 1/2" and don't rust. Really can't see them the rest of the year. If your gutter guards are installed with screws you can back out a screw every 4 ft and put a piece of aluminum or copper wire off it. Hang the...

    Garage Ramp Build

Looks to be PT lumber. It will work great and the car is not going far in the air. My concern is sinking into the dirt. If it does that after a few years it is half a days work to raise it back up. Strength wise, it will be strong enough.

    Painting Electric Baseboard Heater

I painted all mine with the wall paint. Just wiped them down with a wet rag. I took them apart first and painted them on saw horses. Don't paint the heating part you don't see normally. No worries as they don't get over 200*

    Gargage heat in Iowa

It all depends on your final needs. I have a 24 x 48 garage and heated it last year with a $100 propane torpedo heater from Tractor supply that ran off a BBQ tank. It would raise about 10 degrees in 30 min but it did smell a little from the fumes. You are supposed to have a door open a...

Is it worth it? Changing garage door

If you can keep the air in the garage, then it will stay warmer. A good insulator has a lot of air that DOES NOT move. So keeping a draft out of the door will dramatically help. Insulation is something that is a one time cost. Replace the door, insulate the walls. Then run electric and...

    Garage Ramp Build

A little late now for this, I agree that the area the wheels roll over could be doubled up. The part of the ramp touching the ground is going to sink over the years. Really it should have been dug down 6 inches and filled with gravel for drainage. When it rains the ground will be soft and it...

What did you do "IN" your garage today?

Installed a rear light on ATV for plowing. It is dark at 4:30 pm, been close to backing into things a few times.

What are your favorite convenience and specialty non-vehicle specific mechanic tools?

I dumped some old diesel with crud into my tractor. Caused me to take the tank off the tractor and clean it out for a small pea size blob. Friend told me about this Mr. Funnel. It filters out water and junk from gas, diesel, kerosene and fuel oil. Great for when you use a portable can. I...

Do I run an electrical line here?

I have a 550ft driveway and rented a trencher to lay wire to the road. I put 12/2 UF wire in the trench. I use it for Halloween and Christmas lights. The trencher was $500 to rent. Call local electrical supply houses and get the wire in one length. I used 2 rolls of 250ft and 1 roll of 50ft...

    Pet doors

Why do you have a dog that is not allowed inside your house? Seems more like a farm animal then a dog. Build a dog house and put a small heater in it for the winter if you don't want the dog in your house.

    Paving stone Polymeric Sand Washout

That last picture it looks like there is no polymetric sand at all. Once mine set up it has a rubber feel like silicone glue, but does not wash out. If I pick it then a chunk will break off, but not little grains of sand. Try a different brand of sand first maybe?

Looking for ideas. Anyone set up their garage with nothing touching the floor?

Look at all that wasted floor space for storing stuff! I could never do this. If you have limited tools and supplies in a garage I think you can do this with a french cleat system. If you have a lot of tools, I don't see how. Things like jack, table saw, sheet goods, and just materials (2x4...

Question: Is this supposed to be hot?

Thanks all. I don't work on circuits "live" as I know I will touch something or cross something by accident. In this case, the neutral I was unhooking from the bus bar in the panel was supposed to be off. I traced the wire wrong and I ended up taking off a live circuit by accident.

How would you fix this deck/outdoor staircase?

Agreed above. Get some 3" torx drive screws. Pull the nails or drill new holes and put those screws in. They will hold really well. Also paint or solid stain it. That keeps moisture and sun off the wood itself. Do it after a few warm dry days. You could take off the deck material and put...

Question: Is this supposed to be hot?

Lonnies, Thanks. That was my thinking, but I was not sure. I tested a light and when it was turned on, the neutral did not make the AC sniffer beep.
