    Framing nail length

I'm framing a space with 2x4's and wanted to get one box of nails for the job. My nailer is a 0.131 x 21 degrees. Can I use 3" nails to toenail? The advantage of 3" nails over 3 1/2" is I can nail jack and king studs together with no stick out. Are 3" nails sufficient for the job?

Pex main shutoff valves for under vanity installation

I want to install main shutoff valves for each apartment in my renovation project. I used to use copper for water supply and used a long bonnet style shutoff valve. See pic below. Anyone know if there is a PEX-A (expansion PEX) shutoff that looks like that. I've been looking but cannot find...

Used Milwaukee 1001-1 right angle corded drill worth it??

I've got to cut a bunch of holes thru 2x4s to vent 2 bathrooms and 1 kitchen. My cordless Ridgid 18v drill takes a long time to get thru a stud. I have a corded mud mixing drill (9amp) that gets thru studs quicker, but it won't fit in a 16 oc stud bay. I saw this used Milwaukee right angle...

I need to move a load bearing wall in my renovation project. The plan is to build a new 2x4 wall (red line in the pic) and then cut out the old wall. Plan is a double plate 2x4x16 on top. And a single plate on the bottom. Should I place my studs in line with the ceiling joists or the floor...

Replacing a fan on a window AC

My AC in my workspace wasn't cooling so I brought it to my work bench and started inspecting it. I turned it on with the cover off and it started working fine. I think the A/c was tilted back too far and that was causing some issues. My workbench is flat and the AC was humming along. I...

Black gas pipe left right ****** in wall

Can I leave a left/right black gas ****** in the wall? I know unions require an access panel. I'm running my pipe from stove toward the source. Construction constraints make stove to source much easier than the other way around. Location is NYC.

    Notching 2" tube by hand

Part of my Jeep's aftermarket front bumper is rusted out and I'd like to replace it. The bumper is 2" round tube and I found some 1.8" tube being thrown out. Plan is to take the bumper off and cut out the bad section. Next I'd have to cut a 45 on one end of the new tube and notch the opposing...

    Whats supporting this old fireplace?

I'm renovating a 100-year old 3-family building in Brooklyn. Each floor has 3 old fireplaces - that I'm guessing they were used to burn coal or wood. They've been covered up with plaster & lathe at some point. My plan is to cover the fireplaces up with studs and sheetrock. I'd like to make...

Thinking about installing mini-splits for my renovation job

I'm gut renovating a 3-family building in Brooklyn NYC and I just started on the 2nd floor. 3rd floor is complete. I posted on a Brooklyn forum for my target renters and overwhelmingly people want mini-splits vs steam radiators and window A/Cs. The steam system runs off one gas boiler and one...

Using Harbor freight electric hoist to move steam radiators

I've got to restore 7 cast iron steam radiators. I've done 4 already - I remove the old paint and crud using a lye bath and then paint the radiators. For the bigger radiators I have to ask for a friend's help 3x for each radiator. One to get the radiator into the bath, 2nd time to flip it...

Sharkbite fitting installed too close to copper fitting

I mindlessly put this copper cap onto a pipe length that didn't have enough space to get my disconnect clip onto. The reducer fitting just below the cap is blocking me from getting my disconnect clip on. IS there anyway I can salvage this sharkbite cap?

I'm getting ready to order a metal door with a knock down frame for the entry door into an apartment unit. Inside the apartment is 3/4" hardwood. The hallways are going to be finished with LVP. Looks like 1/4" thick. I plan on making a transition out of hardwood to cover the gap b/w the...

    Cleaning spray foam gun

Anyone have experience cleaning out spray foam guns? I borrowed one from a friend and it refused to shoot anything out. My friend always keeps a can of spray foam attached to the gun and sprays it once every 4 weeks to keep it from clogging. I'm pretty sure something dried up either at the...

Removing threaded insert from wire shelving

I have a metal wire shelf that I'd like to weld threaded stem casters to. I took the shelf apart and found there was already a 1/4-20 threaded insert inside the shelf poles. My casters are 2" poly wheels with a 1/2"x13 thread. I looked around for 1/4-20 threaded casters but all I can find are...
