Tools you hate but wont die to replace

Love mine. Bought another pair at a yard sale to carry in my camper. For typical use, they aren’t much, but in a situation where you need a serious grip on something that flexes, they are great.

Tools you hate but wont die to replace

Amen! More to do now that I’ve retired from two jobs. What has gone down is the stress. Stuff gets done when it gets done, and if something I’m working on isn’t going right and it has me frustrated I can have a beer or a cup of coffee and take a nap.

How do you park your vehicles?

Plentiful doors. Cars, truck, tractor mower and ATV all have direct access to a door. Bobcat and boat require moving one other thing to get out. Makes life easier.

How would you dig a long, shallow trench along a fence?

4” deep, I’d use a square spade, an edger and a little patience. Cut the sod with an edger at the sides, wet it down thoroughly and then dig out as needed. At 4”, you’ll have a huge leverage advantage. Try it for a short distance and you’ll find it’s not bad. I’d expect a few hours for the whole...

What would you store in this rolling cabinet?

I‘d be thinking chocks, hydraulic jacks, jack stands, brake tools, wheel bearing grease etc.. A mobile suspension, wheel and brake station. i have several trailers to maintain, so it would handy to me for that.

Routing lots of underground utility lines, proper methods?

Get a large sheet of graph paper and mark all the fixed things like the house on it to scale. Then figure out the routing and mark all of your underground work to help future you remember where everything goes. I did this and took pictures as well. When we did an addition, I got my diagram and...

    Waterless hand cleaning station?

When I was young, I would sometimes ride with my grandma to pick up my grandpa from work at the railroad shop. I’d go into the coat room where they kept their coats, yard gear and lunch buckets and carry my grandpa’s lunch bucket to the car. The smell of Goop was everywhere as those mechanics...

    Waterless hand cleaning station?

If the reached my shoulders, that might work. I inevitably end up with grease at least up to my elbows or torn gloves .

    Waterless hand cleaning station?

No water in my shop, though there’s a hydrant in the yard that I can swing by on my way to the house. Not planning to bring water inside as it’s not heated all of the time. I’ve been entertaining the idea of a station with a roll of paper towels, rags, waterless cleaner and a bucket for used...

    Site leveling questions

Trying to fill with excavated soil and pour concrete on it generally ends in a mess. The complexity of getting it compacted makes it a futile effort for a small project except in areas with perfect soil. Get rid of all organics from the footprint, raise the floor area with compacted stone and...

    Rain water collection system

Bit of an optical illusion on the run to the tank. Though it’s flatter than I’d like, it’s not as flat as it looks. There is a vent from the fill port on the bottom tank that goes up higher than the top tank.

Back in the shop after a snowbirding hiatus

Lost our very good dogs three years ago to cancer. Hard doing without them, but easier to travel. The male would wait for me at the shop door every morning, even when his health was failing. Going into the shop and laying on his rug was a big deal to him.

Back in the shop after a snowbirding hiatus

Rolled in late last night after a lengthy stay in a warmer place. Walked out to the shop this morning and just soaked it in for a minute! I helped a friend with a small remodeling project during the trip, but I was often missing a tool I wanted from home. I did spend a little of his money on a...

    Rain water collection system

Painting them prevents algae, and they last for many years in sunlight even without paint. My neighbor has one with the top cut off that has been outdoors for easily 7 or 8 years and still holds water.

    Rain water collection system

Yes. Strapped together with stainless cable ties to keep them from moving when empty. Outlets are plumbed together to fill the bottom one, which has a vent that goes higher than the fill point. It will be the first part of March before I can get pictures. We are heading south to warmer weather...

    Rain water collection system

I have a pair of 330 gallon IBC totes stacked near a corner of my barn. Eave is about 14’ back in that corner. Being fed by a 28’x64’ section of roof. Use it on the garden and our fruit plantings since our well water is high in sodium. I have a diverter in the downspout so I can send the water...

Keeping your woodwork and metalwork areas separate

If I was starting with a blank canvas, I’d build an isolated block or all metal area for dirty or hot work. Welding, grinding, plasma cutting, torch work etc. where there would be very little flammable material. Scares me to think about welding in a space where there is sawdust and wood. I end...

Filling a gap between slabs inside the shop

One answer without quotes. Not sure I can figure out quotes right now, though the pain has finally let me sit upright enough to read. I don’t think there is any relative movement between the slabs. I have a set of steel bank money cabinets that I put a top on as a kind of assembly bench. I...

Filling a gap between slabs inside the shop

When I built my shop, we were 8 months from building a new house, so finances were a little tight. We had equipment and tools stored in the basement, at our parents homes, under tarps and at rented storage, so getting a building up was high priority even given our recent expenditures. To cut...
