    Show Your Vintage Knife

Thanks all for your comments on Grandpa's Western knife. Will give it a once over soon and put it back to work as soon as possible. This one will not rot in a drawer or a box.

    Show Your Vintage Knife

My Mom gave me this old knife that belonged to my Grandfather. I would like to show it a little love. What is the best way to clean or condition the handle and sheath as well as clean the bit of surface rust from the blade. Don't want to do a big restoration, just keep it nice while it is in my...

    Another old transmission jack question

A friend has this old trans jack in his shop and she's a leaker. Any suggestions on who made this one (no tags or labels)? It seems it spent some time in a local school shop, is pretty heavy duty and for age, some of the pedals and fittings are cast iron. Any info would be appreciated.

"The item under the box of springs is unknown"...Might be a flywheel puller for a small engine or motorcycle. A puller of some kind.

    2021 Garage Sale Thread

Dropping of some bagels at my Mom's house this AM I saw a "FREE" sign and an assortment of tools at a house nearby. I picked a made in W. Germany 3 1/4 lb. axe with a decent handle, a lock nut wrench, a Stanley framing hammer head and a Chinesium gear puller and a working(!) Technics receiver...

What to do with old (galvanized??) water heater?

Good on you for hauling it out. Might be glass lined, and if it were me I would scrap it but I hate throwing stuff away if it can be used for something. Not a pressure vessel or water tank.

    The repurposing thread

I found these at Habitat for Humanity for 15 bucks each. Painted to match my other tool cabs. They now live under my mill for tooling and such. Before and after pics.

What did you do "IN" your garage today?

Finally had a little time to play with the new to me HF mill and decided that it needed a power drawbar. The 2 wrench fiddle on the top of the machine is a pain and a power option seemed easier. Got it to the "it works" stage and will use it for a bit before I call it good. The parts involved...

What did you do "IN" your garage today?

Made a replacement idler pulley for my sander/grinder. The old zinc unit had a plain steel bearing sleeve that would seize up no matter what I used for lubricant. Made a new one using skate board type sealed bearings. We'll see how it holds up.

    2020 Garage Sale Thread

So this year has been dry and slow for a lot of reasons. Yesterday, a neighbor asked if I could look at a couple of things at her Moms house. Turns out it was a couple of simple adjustments so I told them no charge, you are my neighbors. Mom asked if I needed any tools. If you do, help...

So I bartered a few repairs for some tools today and this came with the lot. Appears to be a railroad lock box, but what is it used for? Grips? Lunch? Any ideas?

    The Machine Work Thread

Need a little help figuring something out. Just got a HF round post mill. It can use R8 collets, and has a MT3 taper in its spindle and it came with a few R8 collets. My lathe has a MT5 opening on the chuck side of the spindle and I have no collets for that. Is there an adapter and/or what...

Removing the name could be done by a reseller that is not a dealer or distributor. Used to see Craftsman wrenches and other Sears branded items with the name removed or defaced at a local "Outlet" store. Might also limit warranty claims.

What did you do "IN" your garage today?

Got my new-to-me mill off the ground and mounted to its table. The cabinets I found fit great under the table and this shows a before and after paint picture. Moved a half a ton of stored **** out and back and will have to sort it at some point.

What did you do "IN" your garage today?

Had been looking for a used tool chest to keep tooling for my new to me bench top mill. Nothing interesting or useful (or cheap enough) popped up. Went to the new Restore just to see what they had and came across these 4 drawer file cabs. The drawers are on roller slides and are pretty deep...

You have just described my first compressor. Found a belt drive ref pump, scrounged a motor, bought a pressure switch from the surplus store and used a old Freon tank for storage. Cased it all in a old kitchen cabinet from the curb and viola! I used this compressor for years until I bought a...

Former boss told me he used model T engines for a compressor. 2 to run it, 2 to for the pump and a big wood barrel next to it for a radiator.
