What did you do "IN" your garage today?

A fish tape leader is a short section of a very flexible material (picture an old-skool speedometer cable) that attaches to the end of a "standard" 1/8" fish tape: They also make entire 'fish tapes' out of this material. The Klein one picture is $20 from Bezos. Knock-offs are cheaper. Just...

What did you do "IN" your garage today?

Did a little cleaning, organizing and throwing things away. I still have way too much stuff in the garage. Then I spent time measuring and planning. I think I may have figured out how I’m going to actuate dust collecting blast gates remotely at a palatable cost. Then I ordered some bits and...

What did you do "IN" your garage today?

Got the snow blower out, put it away. Did some picking up and unboxing in the woodshop. Fiddled about with the dust collecting piping and determined what additional bits and pieces I need. And…. Back out to to the garage in and hour or so for round 2 of snow removal. Yay.

Milwaukee vs. DeWalt “Winter” glove comparo

0 degrees F There’s a thick fabric layer under the elastomer. I’d say these are perfectly fine around 15F - or if you are handling cold, sloppy stuff.

Milwaukee vs. DeWalt “Winter” glove comparo

Once upon a time, I had a pair of leather mittens with liners - I agree - superior to gloves in low temps. The fingers on the Milwaukee gloves fit fine, but either glove is sub-optimal for winter duty (unless you are in Phoenix).

Milwaukee vs. DeWalt “Winter” glove comparo

Ok not really a tool, but maybe you will find this informative - or not. I've had both of the above pairs of gloves since fall - they are both advertised as "cold weather" gloves. Both sold for a bout the same price. Red from Home Despot and yellow from Blowes. It was a touch cold out...

What did you do "IN" your garage today?

In my dreams, I’ll set up my drafting table somewhere. Started with a Mayline board with a parallel rule in 6th grade. Picked up a drafting machine in college on a student discount. Many hours of dreaming and drawing. As a kid, it was a treat when my dad took me to the Dietzgen store. Good times!

Scored 2 Lista Cabinets, Questions About Restoration

Well bought! The big thing is the rollers on the drawer carriages being in good shape - mine needed hours of work to get rolling freely. Lube them up pronto. For the rusty drawers, just clean up the rusty areas, use rust reformer and paint. IIRC, there is a rustoleum color that is close. At...

What did you do "IN" your garage today?

Just run a length of 3/4 sealtite and you can wire it as you wish. And while sealtite typically has a continuous bonding conductor, we always ran an additional ground wire because, well... people driving forklifts.

Home generator - Am I crazy?

Several years ago, we bought one of these at work in case of a prolonged outage: It was a good news / bad news situation. The good news is that it was relatively inexpensive, started right away and that we never really needed it. Power outages were at most only a few hours in length and were...

Home generator - Am I crazy?

Well, that answered that question. Of course you could choose a ng water heater, a gasoline engine welder, etc. .. But if your power utility is that unreliable, then overkill may be justified.

Home generator - Am I crazy?

Have your electrician wire in the transfer switch and figure the rest out later. 14-20 kW should be plenty unless you have a 5000 sf house. If the power is out, do you REALLY need to use your welder?

What did you do "IN" your garage today?

Not much today. No hangover, just feeling unmotivated with this gloomy weather. As long as the woodshop is all discombobulated, I spent some time figuring out improved dust collection. I had some bits and pieces laying about, but like any plumbing project, not enough of the right fittings...
