I don't know anything about your 14"saw, but accurate re-sawing is difficult and not every saw is up to the task. I'd re-saw plenty of 6"stock using the saw species of wood you'll be using at 8" to get comfortable it's up to the task before investing in a riser and longer blades.

I think OSB is ****. I'd leave it bare studs until I could afford at least 1/2 inch ply. OSB just does't hold a screw very well.

You could drill holes through the steel top and screw it in from underneath. If your using natural wood (as opposed to plywood) make sure and drill the holes over-size to account for seasonal movement of the wood.
