    Chainsaw disappointment

If you only need a consumer grade saw for rare use, get one. If you want a semi-pro ranch saw or pro saw, be prepared to spend the $$. Can't get a Caddy at Kia prices Echo, Husqvarna and Stihl all make good saws with varied durability and price ranges.

Does the slab have a vapor barrier? After 2 mos I suspect ground moisture wicking.

Is it worth building now? Construction materials cost.

Build what you can afford and makes you happy. I'm told lumber is due to go up another 30-35% this year. The bids will be higher this year. I would seek steel frame quotes the way wood is going.

Service door 5 feet up wall?

Anything is structurally possible. Your plan/builder would need to use either stick built rafters, scissor or custom trusses the first several feet of the building near the house to allow space for the door, entry and stairs. That said, you'll need to check if your building department will allow...

Pole barn building size increments of 8'

Try another builder for estimates on the 20x28 you want. I know my local 84 lumber does material lists based on any size and often uses rafters or trusses on 16" or 24" centers. A stick-built 20x28 doesn't seem too wasteful. On 8 foot centers maybe, but stick or steel frame would be easier at...

    cordless vs. air impact wrench

For ease of use with tire rotations and brakes, get the 18v Milwaukee. Love mine, no getting hoses out and put away. If you already have shop air and a good sized compressor, air has some advantages but a modern cordless 1/2 impact has plenty of power.

Snowblower 2020 edition - simplicity ariens etc ?

Not on your original list, but please look at a Honda snowblower. Although I had good service for years from a 2 stage Simplicity before i went to a larger blower on my tractor, the upheavels in the small power equipment market with Ariens using LCT engines and Briggs filing for bankruptcy make...

That Bridgeport WILL come out one way or another...

Although not DIY friendly, have you priced having an industrial rigger move it? Yes it will cost more than a friends wrecker, but they are professional machine movers with all the equipment and will shift responsibility for damage from you to them. You worked hard to find a clean machine, don't...

Building a fence and deck for my new house , what tools should I get ?

Having built our pool deck about 2 yrs ago, get a drill and impact driver set. I like my M18 Milwaukee pair. You need both, the drill to predrill the screw holes, then the impact driver for the deck screw. If you can swing the $, the "trex" style deck boards are worth every penny over 5/4...

Thinking outside of the box... Hybrid building/foundation.

One issue is finder a builder willing to use a foundation design that is not their normal. That said, if you are OK with a pole style build and adding the slab after the building, there are pole barns built on pre-fab concrete pilings - Perma-Columns I think if you want to avoid underground...

    what's the best 1/2 Impact?

I have a pre-fuel brushed 18v Milwaukee 1/2" impact, has worked flawlessly on every nut I put it on to include lug nuts and mower blade bolts. I think with the hammering anvil nature of an impact they will never be "quiet". I think if you already have a favorite cordless system that is a good...

How do you tell if you need garage door reinforcement

I have similar insulated wayne-dalton doors. One cracked where the opener bracket was screwed in. Go to a large door dealer and purchase a reinforcing strut to place across the first rib on the top section to reinforce where the opener pulls.

    Outdoor Friendly Tool Chest?

If you need to seal it from the elements, most military surplus ammo cans have a rubber seal, depending on the budget, Pelican makes several tool cases such as the 0450 and all of their cases seal airtight. If you do seal the tools up, use a dessicant such as silca in the box to absorb moisture...

Do they make vented torpedo heaters?

Vented torpedo heaters are available, usually the hot air output is ducted to the area of need. They are called indirect fired heaters. Similar to a torpedo, but with the combustion air used with a heat exchanger to keep the fresh air fresh. I've seen only diesel fired ones, usually used as tent...

How much impact do I need?

This is garage journal, you "need" at least a 3/8" cordless impact, a mid size 1/2" cordless, a heavy duty full-size 18V+ cordless 1/2" impact and one or more 1/2" or larger air impacts for heavy work with a full assortment of sae and metric 6 and 12 point impact sockets. That said I have a...
