two portable generators on one service

Although the more expensive whole house generator is an option, you could consider double checking your loads if one can sustain the essentials, giving you a back-up genset. If you want more than 8Kw and since you are already set up for a portable generator, you could consider a larger portable...

    Snow Blower Follow Up

I also vote for the Simplicity, not just because I own one, but because it has larger tires so i will more easily handle irregularities in the surface or powering thru the snow. Enjoy your new toy. If you can find a nearby station with ethanol-free gas and stabilize the last tank before summer...

    Most reliable snow blower?

My Simplicity blower with the 8 hp Briggs engine has been reliable and easy to start for 11 years. Essentially all the current major players (Simplicity, Ariens and Toro) use Briggs and Stratton engines and Honda snowblowers use, well Honda. I think larger 2 stage snowblowers with easier to...

    Advice for basement wall finishing.

Essentially the two gentlemen who recommended foam bonded to the concrete are in line with the best available recommendations. You might find the link below on basement insulation recommendations and some cons to fiberglass batts helpful reading. On a side note, be sure you have no...

Need recommendations for high-security patio door

I know you mentioned a sliding door, but if you want security, take a hard look at french doors, beefier doorframes, less glass and the use of traditional deadbolts. That said, our first house had a sliding patio door that was french door style. The frame was about 8" thick all the way around...

Nitrogen for tire inflation at home?

So it looks like the collective wisdom is no and it's not worth it. I was just thinking since all our local tire shops fill new tires with N2 maintaining that fill at home would be easier than driving to the dealer all the tire and a "justification" for another tool at home. I guess I will wait...

Nitrogen for tire inflation at home?

Just curious if anyone is set-up at home to maintain tires filled with nitrogen? I was debating one of those set-ups with the tank, regulator and hose to be able to top-up car tires without going back to the tire center, maybe trying it in the family bicycle tires. Am I nuts for thinking of...

    generator?

Some of the newer inverter generators (Honda) will throttle up and down with load so you will use less fuel when just running lights. You could start with something for just smaller loads or big enough for an air compressor and add a gas powered welder and or air compressor later. For temp use...

Why Install The Main Panel In the Garage?

Around northern Amherst, NY, many new homes are built with the panel in the garage for 100-yr flood zone compliance. All utilities have to be above the 100 year flood level for fema compliance. They also hang furnances from the basement ceiling to keep them above the line.

    Gasoline Generator Suggestions

For a home standby use portable, I strongly recommend considering a tri-fuel style. (runs on gas, propane or natural gas). The new ethanol gas is harder to store and stabilize long term and unless you want to keep a huge amount of gas on hand, it gets hard to find during an outage. Had a...

Radial Arm Saw or Sliding compound Miter saw??

I second the compound mitre saw and table saw contingent. I own both and can do any homeowner woodworking I want to. The radial arm saw has gone somewhat by the wayside from size and safety reasons. It is easy to get kickback from them. If the radial arm saw was great, home depot, lowes and...

HF 42" buy wrinkle or gloss?

I have been looking to grab one of the 13 drawer units to add more tool storage and as a workbench in the garage. Been waiting on an opportunity to have a vehicle and help moving it with a 349 coupon good till feb. I see the gloss is coming out. I hadn't cared about the wrinkle finish before...

Flashlights, Streamlight? Mag Light? Snap On?

Pelican has some great lights and lifetime warranty except for the bulb itself. Surefire's are also very tough, I have one from my year in Afghanistan still going strong. Look at the extra $$ for rechargeable at home since the cr123 batteries are not cheap.

    Best Circular Saw under $100

Another vote for a good carbide blade makes a huge difference on any saw regardless of cost. That said, I love my Bosch circular saw, I think the porter-cable, makita and dewalt are also nice. There is a difference between the 30-40 dollar skil and the more expensive brands, but you won't...

    Generator runs but no power!

I forget the exact way to do it (google it) but if it hasn't been run in a while try "flashing" the generator with a battery. A component may have lost magnetism. A bad diode is another possibility but try the flash first. http://www.endtimesreport.com/dead_gen.html

    Generator Outlets

Before changing your 30 amp rv plug, how about making up ay cord with an RV plug. Also not that anyone would backfeed a 240 circuit, check out a generator interlock kit for an economical code compliant solution. http://www.interlockkit.com/

buying a backup generator- what do you have?

I also have one of the infamous 5500 series generac/briggs portables. Worked well for 10 days no power after a freak Oct snowstorm. When it dies or I can justify replacing it I will get a tri-fuel portable, either Winco or Yamaha. For a portable genset, tri-fuel seems a great way to go. I can...

    Ripping 2x4s: My Saw Struggles

I would also replace the blade. Blades dull and after 15-20 yrs the technology and tips are better. A sharp blade will cut faster with less motor work. Strongly recommend the carbide tips, more teeth equals a finer cut.

Addiction therapy isn't cheap either so as long as you can pay your bills, keep your tool purchases below the equivalent co-payment value at your favorite local shrink and everyone can be happy.
