Any structural engineers here? I-beam/Trolly question!

Been there, done that. Don't use ladders and try to lift the beam in place. That is risky and if it falls, you have issues. When I did it, I went up into the attic space, and tied 3 roof trusses together by screwing some 2x6s to them and used a chain hoist to raise the beam. Did all this myself...

    6x8 work shop

Been there/done that. I think this was 6x10 though, but it was a tight space even for reloading. The day I finished it. After I cluttered it up.

    Harbor Freight worth the trip?

Yep. The HF near my house has one of those banners up right now. I see it at least once a year and they haven't closed yet.

Steel beam or wood I joists?

15th Edition is the current one, but to be honest, I reach for the 9th edition more often. I know where everything is in that one.

Steel beam or wood I joists?

:D To be fair, I have all of the steel design manuals from the last 20 years on the table right behind my desk at the office.

Steel beam or wood I joists?

Not to be argumentative, but a W10x46 will carry 47,600# at 23'. Granted, you're comment about a taller beam will result in a much less expensive beam as a W14x34 will carry the same load and be 30% lighter/cheaper.

Steel beam or wood I joists?

One would hope that a PE was at least consulted for either wood or steel. Doubt you would get a building permit without it. None of this stuff is rocket science. There are tables that tell you exactly how strong a steel beam will be for a given length and there are the same tables for wood...

Steel beam or wood I joists?

Being in the steel business as well, I can attest that it is cheaper than the wood alternative and in a smaller section. Did something similar in my garage a couple of years ago when I added a FROG. Never considered wood. 24 feet is easy-peasy with steel.

    Beer bottle opener

Bought one of these a few weeks ago from Spiderco specifically because I wanted something smaller than the Swiss Army I had carried for 20 years but I still needed as bottle opener. So far, I love it.

    New workshop build progress

Nice, I like what you are doing here. I'll be stopping by frequently to see your progress. My house is just getting started so I won't be putting my workshop together until next year sometime.

Garages in 2019, air vs electric

I agree that some air is essential, but I have no idea why so many are considering piping in their whole garage so that you have a drop near you wherever you are. That is expensive and just not necessary for a home garage/shop. I have one hose reel with 50' on it and 3 more hoses hanging on...

    The Leather Shop

I dabbled in leather working for a bit. Made a few holsters and sheaths a few years ago when I thought I might be interested in Cowboy action shooting. That phase passed. :D

    Garage heating on a budget

Not built yet. I assume so and will be keeping an eye on it as it gets built.

    Garage heating on a budget

While possible, that probably isn't ideal since I don't want it heated unless I am in there. I would prefer a dedicated thermostat for the garage. Multi zone heating in a house can get pricey pretty quick.

Tools I've bought but not used? That stack of 30 round magazines I bought during the Obama years.

    Garage heating on a budget

Hi all, We're building a new house and the 3 car garage will end up being the work shop until I free up funds for a pole barn later down the road. With that being said, I need to find a way to economically heat it during the winter months. I'm thinking about something like this...

    Worx pressure washer

Just thought I'd post this here since I was just on their website buying more batteries. I bought this pressure washer a couple of years ago when it first came out and we are still using it to this day. Love it for what it is. A pressure washer that doesn't need a hose connection and is...
