It sounds like they didn't compact enough or at all. In a similar situation in the past a water line had to be dug up under an area that was to be finished with interlocking paving stones. When we filled the excavation we compacted the fill every 12"-18" and poured the water to it in between...

I would say keep them unless you need the money.

Either a lift or a couple of friends with ladders and a case of cool ones. Get yourself a drywall screwgun too if you don't have one. Screws not nails! Screw every 6"-8" around the edges and every 12"-16" on each joist through the sheets. Makes sure you have blocking for the drywall to screw...
