Rebuild or replace: Snap-on TM 70 B ratchet

Someone else here had the same ratchet and sent it back to Snap-On for repair. They sent him a new T72. Definitely worth trying. See thread here: http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=30445

Ratchet Back Drag Measurement and Snap-On F936 Mod

I was working on my truck the other day and ran into the situation where the bolt moved with the ratchet in both directions. This is very annoying when you can't get your fingers on the bolt and have to go find another ratchet to finish getting the bolt out as you probably know. Folks here...

    13mm Socket Contact Points

"Older" sockets contacted the nuts and bolts on the corners which could cause it to round. Current socket design contacts the the nuts and bolts a short distance from the edge reducing the chance of rounding. That's the main difference I saw. One could look a little closer at contact areas...

    Rikon Lathe Vibration

A friend of mine has a Delta mini lathe like yours. It runs quietly and vibration free. Looking at pics online, the handwheel appears to be axisymmetric and should not cause any vibration. If it wobbles and is tight on the spindle then I'd suspect the spindle is bent or bearings are loose...

Motivation needed restoring a small knee mill

I didn't try to find a machine from a motor rebuilder. It's just the way it turned out. They were local and it was a good deal. I don't have any specs to compare against but my ways don't seem to have a lot of wear on them. I can see the flat top of the Vs widen some but I don't see large...

Motivation needed restoring a small knee mill

Thanks! It took me about 4 months to finish it up. I had to have a crack welded up in the large arm and fab up my own mount for the motor. Both my own fault. I also had to make a shim for the spindle to keep it from wedging; a common problem on these lathes. For the most part getting it...

Motivation needed restoring a small knee mill

Well, it's not a mill but I hope I can provide some motivation. This is my Hendey lathe that I picked up a couple of years ago. I purchased it from a business that did electrical motor work. I'm convinced they never cleaned it. Ever. In some spots there was 3/8" of gunk (grease, oil, some...

    Separating Corroaded Brass and Aluminum

Hmm an adjustable spanner might work if I could find one large enough. This isn't mine, though I have the same model, but you can see the "nut" on the bottom on the pics in this page. http://www.mohaveinstrument.com/NewFiles/DW8300.html I've got the rest of the transit separated from the base...

    Separating Corroaded Brass and Aluminum

I picked up an old surveying transit that is still on the tripod. The transit and tripod spent a while in a storage shed and corrosion has set in. I'm in the process of disassembling it to clean it up. My issue is that I cannot get the transit off the tripod. The transit has a large "nut"...

    Rockwell/Delta 15-017 Drill Press Chuck

I've had good luck with Rohm chucks and I have one on my older Clausing. They're better quality and cheaper than Jacobs current offerings.

    Drill Press chuck flustration

If you've never removed a chuck from a taper I'd suggest checking out this video starting at 3:30. He shows the use of wedges, and what you can do if the wedges don't work. Tapers are pretty effective at holding things together. More so than you might think. If you don't have wedges, stop...

    Drill press chuck

I'd suggest trying to find a lightly used US made Jacobs chuck or go with a Rohm. I've got a Rohm for a JT33 on my drill press and have only good stuff to say about it. It's priced well too.

    Wood Lathe Turning Tools

I second Penn State Industries recommendation. I've got a good assortment of their tools and find they work well. You can get a nice setup from them pretty cheaply. Then, if you find a tool you use all the time, you can pick it up a nicer version of it if you feel the need. For the money, I...

Prentiss No 21 Repair and Refurbish

I was bummed when I saw one of the mounting ears broken off...but than I saw your fix. Nice! It's so much easier to fix things when you have the right tools. Keep up the good work. It's good to see all these Prentiss posts!

Prentiss #26 wood vise questions before a restoration "coachmaker's vise"

Re: Prentiss #26 wood vise questions before a restoration "coachmaker's vise" Looks like you're making good progress. I'm not sure what the three pins in the swivel jaw do but I don't think they're keeping it from rotating. Maybe someone drilled and tapped some holes for some kind of jig in...

Prentiss #26 wood vise questions before a restoration "coachmaker's vise"

Re: Prentiss #26 wood vise questions before a restoration "coachmaker's vise" Electrolysis for rust removal is a pretty simple setup. Check out this page: http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/andyspatch/rust.htm There's even a nice diagram. Baking soda will work in place of washing soda. Any chance...

    Milwaukee Drill Resto

Thanks for the compliments! I'm glad everyone enjoyed the write up and pics. Probably too much... I've got about $45 in it total currently. The bearings on the armature were pretty pricey. Probably will put a little more into it get a chuck. Oh well, I like old stuff!

    Milwaukee Drill Resto

The postman brought my bearings today. Now that I have them its time to put my Milwaukee drill back together. I pulled the bearings out and compared them to the old ones. Sure, they should be the same but it's good to check. I picked up a small commutator stone from McMaster and used it to...

    Come Along Repair

I saw this cable previously but I don't think it'll work for me. My puller has a ferrule on the end of the cable that goes in the wheel. It appears that the Maasdan replacement part does not. It seems to have a plain end and be held in place with a set screw.
