I don't need a ton of storage in the rafters but it would be nice to have. I've done a lot of renovation work but never framed a roof. I guess trusses are an option, but I am more comfortable with rafter construction. A shed style roof that runs from front of garage to back could be good, but...

It isn't, those are #304 or #307 cans (3 4/16" or 3 7/16" nominal - can sizing is weird) and yes, they are much easier to find. I agree it would be easier to find lids and then get cans to match, but these are really the only size of cans we use on a regular basis.
