Mine has the same issue. Both pawls engage consistently in reverse, however when I switch directions one pawl doesn't engage unless I turn the drive really, really slowly. I will have to pull the ratchet apart again and see if one pawl is looser than the other.

It'd be cool if the old selector worked, it'd make it kind of a sleeper ratchet. But the new selector is easier to grip I think.
