    Exterior painting question

Any idea how the cutters hold up when they hit a nail head? I'm repainting my house now (T-111 plywood siding). I'm using a 2.375" carbide bladed scraper for removing the loose paint. The carbide blades have received some chips from where I hit nail heads that are proud of the siding...

Garage Door Opener type - Screw, Belt or Chain?

Since '95, I've used all 3 type, chain, screw-drive and belt, currently using a belt drive Chamberlain. The only one that actually broke was the screw-drive. A coupler between screw sections. failed. Between chain and belt, the belt drive is quieter.

Cleaning Stinky Screw Drivers with Baking Soda

Maybe the screw driver drawers in my tool chest are well vented, but I've not noticed any foul odor from there. That said, I am both praying for, and terrified by the idea of having enough spare time to focus on hand tool maintenance.

    MIG Pliers

Same here, 3 pair. I have a 1/2" conduit strap affixed to all 3 weld carts for a place to keep them.

What did you do "IN" your garage today?

Modified a set of Harley handle bars... The 1st item to get attention on my Low-Buck '87 FLH project are the handlebars. For me, the stock bars are not comfortable. They're a bit short and have way too much pull back (about 40 degrees). I prefer more of a 'knuckles to the wind' hand position...

Compressor safety, it always bears repeating

FWIW, this is my solution for not leaving the air compressor on... https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/threads/d-iltcoa-light.498499/#post-9606554 The system has been in use for a couple years now and proven effective. In the case that I do leave the air compressor turned on when leaving the...

    Flood Barriers

FWIW, I used it to seal basement windows. Until I cleared out the footer tiles, when we got rain heavier than 1"/hour, the window wells on the southside filled up and leaked into the basement.

    Flood Barriers

I used this and surprisingly, it worked exactly as advertised. I found that it peeled off easier if I didn't wait too long.

Tools put away, or out, and what ideas for having tools out?

For me, it’s an end of day ritual . . . put all tools away where they belong. Even if I’m not done with a project and will be returning the next day to continue, I still put away all the tools. I’ve found it’s much easier to retrieve a tool from where it’s usually stored, than to have to look...

    Old Bed Frame Projects!!!

Whereas I didn't "build" with an old bed frame, I did drill some holes in one to install an underbed gun safe. Whatever Chineseium alloy was used was for the rails was very difficult to drill through. If I have to do another similar project, I'll disassemble the frame and use a plasma...

What did you do "IN" your garage today?

Last Sunday, I turned this... into this... Zoom into 4 o'clock in the clutch and you can see the worst of the frame rot that I'm partially disassembling the bike to fix. Still have to remove the primary, inner primary housing, solenoid, starter and transmission.

Options for small 240V portable generators?

Probably commented on already, but don't underestimate your wattage needs. Our 1st generator was a Porter-Cable 5500 watt (BSV550-W). Whereas it had no problem providing power for my well pump along with a fridge, freezer and handful of lights, the microwave oven brought the portable...

    Show Your Vintage Knife

Maybe someone out there versed in old knives can tell me about this old knife. I know it's at least 59 years old. For as long as I can remember, this knife was in my father's fishing tackle box. Rumor had it that the knife was from Ireland and was my maternal grandfather's. All I...

What did you do "IN" your garage today?

I added a light to my milling machine. The light is a 120mm ring purchased from SuperbrightLEDS. I 3-D printed a U-cup ring, the ID of which fit the 96mm OD of the quill snugly; then cast the LED ring in clear 2-part epoxy.

A probably-stupid question about air hose reels...

I have 2 - 50' air hose reels. 1 in the workshop, mounted above the bottom chord of the roof trusses, plumbed to a 60 gallon compressor. The other is built into a cabinet in the garage and plumbed to a portable 20 gallon compressor. Both work fine. My advise is don't go cheap on the...

Blackboard or Whiteboard for shop use

I have a white board mounted on a hinge so it covers the electric panel in my workshop. Years back, I was careless with grinding steel and sprayed the board with sparks. Now, half the surface had embedded grit.

    Copper Backing Bars

Aluminum melts at about half that of steel. it will melt under a steel weld, possibly adding porosity to your weld. Copper can possibly melt too, but not until about 1900*F.
