Question for the Sparkies - Interlock Backfeed Between Panels???

That makes sense now. The neutral and grounding would be fine assuming they are all bonded properly in the main service. This only works because there is only one service, only one meter. Personally I would move the critical loads to one panel as it makes zero difference which panel a load is...

Question for the Sparkies - Interlock Backfeed Between Panels???

I am not sure if you are right or not actually. How does one put in an interlock and leave the main disconnect? In my view you either have to replace the disconnect with a transfer switch ( interrupt the grid ) or you have the potential of mixing the grid and the generator. Throw in manually...

Question for the Sparkies - Interlock Backfeed Between Panels???

No, if you look at what he wants to do, he doesn't mention changing the main disconnect, he mentions turning off breakers. The 'interlock' is not on the main, but in a breaker on the panel proper. Now, if he was putting in a transfer switch in lieu of the 200A disconnect, perhaps. But in that...

    Understanding 4 way switches

I recall my first Carter 3 way with painful clarity, and have actually used the method for temporary wiring purposes. Makes for an interesting teaching aid for apprentices.

Question for the Sparkies - Interlock Backfeed Between Panels???

The only issue is the grey matter safety. In other words, you 'have to know' how to do this or you can do this wrong and send power back to the grid. ( interestingly enough if you didn't open the unit #2 main you would put power on the grid which would do two things at once, choke the...

    Understanding 4 way switches

First, they work. If the wiring is correct, they always work. When the inevitable 'next' lighting solution appears ( incandescent -> fluorescent -> led -> ? ) they will still work. Second, they are replaceable. There will always be standard switches made ( because they work ). I installed scads...

    Pulling a 150' conduit run

Make a perfect pulling nose, use lube, and expect it to be difficult. The real question, is the self hate worth the money?

Do the Hyperlite Hero lights hang cockeyed?

It is easy enough to balance them with small weights. Last time I had to deal with a customer who was upset over a similar light being a touch off a couple of wire nuts did the trick. I suspect tire weights would work better.

Someone explain "polished wrenches are easier to clean"

Honestly, it is easier to chip dried concrete off of polished wrenches than 'textured' wrenches.

USA made lineman pliers: Is this market saturated?

I have a pair of these 'Aussie' linesman pliers by Benner and Nawman - have to be a Marvel rebrand. They are awesome for low voltage and control work. Clean cuts, the jaws close all the way unlike my Kleins so I can work the wee little wires like I like without grabbing my duckbills, or in the...

    Who's a lineman?

I used to wash my hands in trichloroethylene when I was splicing. Great degreaser. Really bad for humans. Didn't know. Now that I am older I treat everything as if it has long term consequences, if not for myself then at least for all of the young folks coming up in the trade so they have an...

    Who's a lineman?

Many of us didn't know. Lots of things are dangerous in hindsight. Look at all the folks who blew asbestos brake dust around their shops...didn't know. Some of the things we are doing now will, in 30 years, seem totally insane.

    Who's a lineman?

No. However, since the IBEW was originally formed as an organization to support linemen, and every power company in the country is a signatory to one IBEW local or another, and the IBEW facilitates the seemless movement of labor from one area/company to another in times of need ( storm chasing )...

    Who's a lineman?

You ought to do something else completely. First and foremost linemen are union, almost exclusively, and in my experience, they are very union. It comes from years of working together storm chasing. You go across the country and put infrastructure back together after disasters. That sort of...

This method is especially...

    Expansion joint set too "expanded"

Schedule 40 couplings are fine with schedule 80 for your application. I suspect you will be fine with the expansion where it is, but if the stress of not knowing is greater than the effort of adding a couple of couplings and a short piece of conduit...then make the change.
