Machinists/Tool and Die makers, what do you use for your work toolbox?

When I worked as a machinist and my friends who still are. At most shops it seems to be an even 3 way split between Canadian Tire, Grey Tools and just a dash Kennedy but mainly only the top chests. Depends on what kind of tool dealers seem to supply the shops with consumables. Dimitri

    Cordless drill...battery question

And this depends on the specific cell chemistry, which even among the same manufacturer variations for high mAh or high discharge chemistry. Your figure is for cobalt based lithium ion cells (LiCoO2). Which is typically a low discharge rated lithium cell. And not really suitable for power tools...

    Cordless drill...battery question

Yes, the BMS can try and limit discharge, but never fully control it over long periods of time. So if you store them discharged, they will discharge internally just like any other battery chemistry and then eventually fail. All batteries should be stored fully charged and checked on every few...

Mac AW or AWP 434 impact wrench

Different Hammer Frame then the IR 232. The IR231 shares the same hammer frame, as does the CAT350 from Cornwell. Dimitri

    Cordless drill...battery question

I've heard of jumping lead acid batteries. Hard to jump a lithium ion pack when the BMS that controls the charge cycle is built into the pack. You'll have to tear it apart, and then apply ~4V to each of the cells individually for the BMS to be fooled. What your doing is fooling the charger...

    Taps with H1 Thread Limit

Bottoming taps are a last resort kind of thing. When you bottom out a plug, then start using a bottoming tap. But a plug tap is easier to start (both when tapping a new hole, or giving threads a clean up). And is less likely to start cocked like a bottoming tap would. Dimitri

    Thoughts on cordless impact guns

Still a consumable. They wear out like motor brushes, grinding disks, drill bits and all sorts of things do. It's nice they offer lifetime replacement but it shouldn't be the only factor when considering a new power tool. And honestly I don't remember the last time a battery pack wore out on...

    Thoughts on cordless impact guns

Batteries of any type are a consumable. It's like expecting a car battery to last forever. It just isn't going to happen. Dimitri

    Taps with H1 Thread Limit

It is on paper. But in the real world the class of fastener you use matters more then H1 or H3 in most applications. Dimitri

    Taps with H1 Thread Limit

Leg17 is right. A maximum H1 tap, and a minimum H3 tap is only 0.0005" apart in pitch diameter. With a maximum of 0.001" between the two sizes. But the class of bolt/screw you use will play a bigger roll. For example in 1/4-20. Class 1A - 0.2108 to 0.2164 or 0.0056" total tolerance Class...

    Thoughts on cordless impact guns

I had a Mac 3/8" 20V impact, was great. Before it was stolen out of my van, pricy though. Also have a Dewalt 1/2" 20V impact, also great. Bigger and bulkier though. But half the price. If it doesn't take Dewalt Batteries don't buy it. :willy_nil Dimitri

    Metric Roll Pins?

Yes, if you stuff a 1/4" roll pin into a 6mm hole it tends to collapse to the point that it does not want to come out afterwards. Dimitri

    Metric Roll Pins?

We didn't most here hate using the metric system. I just deal with a lot of metric equipment. Dimitri

Astro Automotive Focused Tap/Die set made from Japanese alloy - feedback

I try to only use two flute spiral point taps. They are the most forgiving. Also the extractors, straight fluted or spiral fluted? ... I've never had good luck with straight fluted extractors. Dimitri

    Fairly Comprehensive USA Punch Set?

Dasco is garbage that might as well be made in China and sold for $10 for the set. Starrett if you want American. Jet believe it or not, from Brafasco, if your fine with Chinese/Taiwanese. They seem to last the longest next to the Starretts. Pricy though for an imported tool. Dimitri

    Metric Roll Pins?

Yes, kind of small, most of my work is in the 4mm to 8mm range. Want to stock a half dozen of every size's lengths, but I'll be damned if I can commit to just a handful of lengths each. Dimitri

    Metric Roll Pins?

So I figured this would fit here best. But in an assortment of metric roll pins what would you guys stock? Especially those of you lucky enough to work on European equipment that uses them. SAE sets from hardware supply houses tend to all look the same, but there seems to be no one packaging a...

(For canadians) Mastercraft PASS or FAIL tools

I use Mastercraft sockets at work. Being a field tech and losing tools on customer sites that are expensive kind of *****. So my SK/MAC etc sockets stay at home. Carrying impact and chromed sockets, ***** too, especially when going up and down different levels or having to cross a half a...
