Wishing the US would formally change to the metric system

NASA might have sent a person to the moon first, but that was the only one of very few milestones during the space race both nations were competing for. The first ICBM, first satellite, the first animal in space, first ignition of a rocket engine in space, first moon landing, first pictures of...

In need of a tool bag

So I had my service van broken into this past weekend. Boo. But the thief didn't touch my tool boxes, just took stuff from the shelves, such as my Mac 20V impact gun. But how my Fluke 287 was passed over in one of my Tanos boxes I'll never know. But decided I should probably have a bag with...

    MacTools 3/8" 20V Impact

So MacTools released a 20V version of their 3/8" 12V impact gun labeled BWP138. Having the Dewalt 12V Screw Driver and Drill, the idea of sharing battery chargers was appealing. One charger is better then a half dozen like what used to happen with me. Especially since I just started a job as a...

what tools can't you imagine yourself without?

My mind, But for tools, a decent scan tool. Without the right information (DTC's, freeze frame, and live data) it is nearly impossible to fix a modern car right the first time. Second tool a multimeter, for when it's an off make and there isn't enough live data. Followed by all the normal...

Most common socket & wrench sizes for portable box?

I'd go 7-8-10-12-13-14-15-16-17-19 To cover the ANSI/ISO specific bolts, by including the 15mm and 16mm. I've never seen a DIN fastener with the 11mm head though personally. If room permits, then 21-22-24-27 Which for automotive applications covers a lot of the sensors, plus seat belt...

    Diagnostic scan tools

My last Chrysler dealer had an Autel DS708, which was okay for the limited off make stuff we did. However I am liking my Launch CRP-229 I recently picked up more. Does nearly the same in terms of data, actuators etc, but doesn't throw codes at random immediately after hooking up on some of...

    Interesting Sears Survey- WHAT?!?!

Sears without the loan would have gone under in the US. Actually, Sears without the loan and cash flow from Sears Canada's very loaded bank account would have still gone under even after the property loan. Dimitri

    Tool Trucks

If I ever had a driver expect me to act even half way like that I'd tell him to "fook off". Although not an issue up here, met multiple tool truck guys at various stops on their route, and they treated me probably better then some of the guys I saw on the trucks. Why? It's a business, and many...

    Jaguar landrover tools

No body wants to do Differential rebuilds unless they absolutely have to as a Chrysler Tech. As for tools, other then basic hand tools and a 1/4" drive beam torque wrench, everything is mandatory special tools the dealerships must have. So you don't need anything special. Dimitri

    mac tool thread

I am pretty sure it's all the same wrench as the FACOM 440 which AFAIK is the original wrench. I have been tempted to pick up this set, seeing as the Mac version is the FACOM knock off. Stanley owns all 3 brands. Dimitri

    Tool attrition?

Anybody else find after buying some new fancy gizmo that seemed like a good idea for a specific job it ends up out of the tool box? After posting in the thread looking for cutters for DIP packages, I started to realize all of the nice to have, but utterly unused tools in my box and that I have...

    Clipping Integrated Circuit chips

I use Xcelite's 5inch diagonal pliers for almost anything circuit or electrical related smaller then about 16ga. Including clipping DIP leads, and other through hole parts. The blue handled one has lasted me 5+ years of it. That and a pair of Mac crimpers, have replaced all the fancy different...

    3/8" Socket Set ??

The SK set above gets my vote. It and the 1/4" version are the ones in my box. And other then using the 13mm long chrome once or twice (I swear) on an impact, the sets looks new after 2 years of daily use. Dimitri

    Why hasn't...

Realistically, be it a ratchet, wrench or socket should be able to support it's realistic load. One does not losen 16mm bolts that were gunned down with a 1/4" drive tool. Nor does someone use a 3/4" drive tool to undo the 7mm hex head trim screws of a car. Brute strength is meaningless when...

    Show your new tool arrivals

Picked this up from my Mac guy today, it's my day off so updating it while out to lunch with the Fiancée. She isn't pleased. Dimitri

    Metric only toolbox

Fractions are dead. Plus schools up here have been teaching fractions to little kids for decades without the ability to reference the imperial system of measurement. Dimitri

Other then my Oxygen and oil pressure sensor sockets, I don't have any SAE tooling in my box. And I work at a Chrysler dealership. Dimitri

I think by tool box he means kit. If so something like this might do. http://m.craftsman.com/craftsman-172-piece-all-metric-mechanics-tool-set/p-00946191000P Or http://www.toolsource.com/87pc-metric-hand-socket-p-134754.html Dimitri

what metric size fasteners seem to never show up?

I'll paypal you $10 if you find a M6 in anything but a 10mm Hex. It is about one of the only sizes everyone gets along with world wide. Not Toyota's problem, or their suppliers problem. Just a fact of life with the globalization of industry. ANSI/ISO, DIN and JIS all having slightly different...

what metric size fasteners seem to never show up?

5.5mm is very common on HVAC housings in vehicles. 18mm is common on Chryslers for the seat anchor bolts. My least used must be 9mm, 11mm (never used either actually) and 20mm. Dimitri
