MAC Tools - Made in USA?

Stanley has owned MAC since 1980. Stanley is a pretty odd company, while their Hand Tools have mainly gone off shore, they tend to source things from everywhere and from all their major brands. My wood saw I just bought from Home Depot is made in France for $30. On a rack with other brands...

What happened to the Allen/Armstrong Closing thread?

Yes, especially for forged and casted products like many hand tools, and machinery parts. Automotive part suppliers routinely beat out the Chinese factories that have been making a lot of car parts for the big brands due to this. Specialized high volume production tooling, means you can pay...

    Basic Automotive Tools

I know it's not an absolute. But it gives you something to fall back on if an accident does happen. No training, no licensing, no certification means you have nothing to fall back on to prove that you were "competent and capable" of preforming the task. Being high on the job, or willfully...

Anyone can also move a few levers and use a construction crane, doesn't mean OSHA wouldn't fine you till you are on the street without proper training and certification. Dimitri

    Basic Automotive Tools

Not being trained and/or certified and/or licensed means your doing work you are not qualified for. That under the law is willful negligence. And tends to carry jail time in both Canada and the US. Dimitri

Many of us on this site are licensed and/or certified by ASE or an OEM. Personally I am federally licensed across Canada with a Red Seal, before I left the Automotive world, I was also a Powertrain Master, Chasis Master and Electrical Master as per Chrysler training, completing ALL of their...

    Basic Automotive Tools

That is what liability insurance is for. And government licensing of mechanics in most developed nations and ASE certification in the US is used to offset liability by being able to claim it was a "freak accident" as the person was trained and competent in performing their task. Yes they can...

    Dewalt Flexvolt 4.5/6.0 inch grinder

Just saw the videos didn't really talk about the tool. Other videos claim this is the next best thing for cordless grinders though. Dimitri

    Dewalt Flexvolt 4.5/6.0 inch grinder

So I am in the market for a new grinder. Company issues me a standard 4.5" Bosch corded grinder. Honestly it is useless. As I need a 6" (90% of the time) or 7" disk (10% of the time) to cut off load wheel axles. As I am a believer of common shared batteries for power tools, and all my stuff...

Help in selecting the correct open barrel crimpers

I use this from Mac The $350 Chrysler/Mercedes crimper is identical to that one. But $50 I think from Mac. Not as good as a dedicated crimper with all the proper dies but if you are careful it gets the job done. Dimitri

I prefer a clamp meter for that. For ease of use. Also a DMM for amp draw for parasitic draw is far more important then measuring resistance. Resistance is one of the least useful features of a DMM for automotive work. Voltage drop is a far better indicator of green and damaged wires. Dimitri

Decent Metric Tap & Die Set?

And you are still wrong. You are basically arguing that assault rifles are not rifles because they are by definition capable of fully automatic fire. And because of this different feature, they are nothing like Joe's "hunting" rifle. Does this analogy help you understand? Dimitri

Decent Metric Tap & Die Set?

If you go back and read the Machinist Handbook, earlier editions, or read any tool and die textbook, you'd understand that. Such as the Fundamentals of Tool Design, which is in my bookshelf to the left of me. The changes between the catagories, from W, O, A, D, S, H, T, M, L and P, are the...

Decent Metric Tap & Die Set?

Carbon steel is a generic term for nearly any tool steel. Steel becomes "hard" tool steel by having a above normal carbon content, but not high enough to become cast iron. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tool_steel > With a carbon content between 0.5% and 1.5%, tool steels are manufactured...

    Let's see your toolbox.

Been a road service tech for a while now. Big clunky boxes had to go. Picked up the Tanos box with drawers, and a 2U box, finally got around to getting the Festool cart and a parts tray holder. Let's see how the cart goes, it's only been a week. Dimitri
