    Argh! Lost some tools

I accumulate tools slowly and as needed. Occasionally I will pickup items that catch my eye while browsing for something else. I've inherited some of my grandfather's carpenter tools and my father's collection of tools. Tools for me are like a collection that has been carefully put together...

Best way to find garage ceiling joist?

If you have attic access over the garage... go up there and do some measuring. You could use ceiling lights or outlets as a reference point. Either that or use an awl to poke a hole through the drywall from the attic side right beside one of the joists. From that reference you can measure out...

    When to install porcelain tile?

I have to admit... One fear with porcelain tile install is something happening to the slab after the install that affects the appearance and install of the tiles... and then it being a big deal to sort out. I have not read about any disasters here regarding a porcelain install which...

    removing black adhesive...

Some product called C-Tar Melt is supposed to work. I've tried other methods to no avail... like heat and solvents. At this point I'm considering just covering it up with another product... perhaps Race Deck or Swiss Trax. At least with that if the floor gets wet again they can be removed...

    OSB vs. ply roof

Several years ago I used plywood on the roof. First, the plywood was not as slippery as the OSB and thus would somewhat eliminate my fear of sliding right of the edge. Second, I was told by the friend who owned the lumber yard that plywood would hold the roofing nails better. Fast forward...

    removing black adhesive...

50 years ago when my father built a duplex he decided it would be a good idea to lay vinyl tile in the mechanical room directly on the cement. He layed that black adhesive directly on the cement then applied the tiles. Now fast forward 50 years... mom had a drain block in the basement and the...

    When to install porcelain tile?

My new garage will have a post-tension concrete slab. How soon after the pour can porcelain tiles be installed? I am in no rush. Would it be wise to wait a year allowing the concrete to settle in? I like the tiles (Race Deck, Swisstrax, etc) but feel that the porcelain will add more long term...

    Starting in Woodworking

Do you have flat floor space? Pickup a sheet of foam 1" to 2" thick. Lay your wood to cut on top of that then set your saw depth appropriately to not cut past the depth of the foam + wood leaving yourself a comfortable margin.

    G'day from San Antonio...

Hi folks! I am currently garage-less  but that will change in a few months when my house build is finished. Garage will be an attached 20x18... not a huge place but enough to keep me happy. I will be finishing it out and looking forward to lots of good reading and participation here!
