Imperial Journey - a Restoration Saga

It is a slow road of rebuild and repair for about the last 16 years. It is a '54 Dodge C1D 1 ton, dually, stake bed that spent its life as a work truck for a roofing company. It was retired at about 57-ish thousand miles (I think?), then got parked outside in a parking lot for a couple decades...

Imperial Journey - a Restoration Saga

Love that factory turquoise! This is my 230 flathead I am finishing up in my '54 Dodge Truck. Even though it is not factory for that year (silver), this just looks right to me in there, even though it is Chrysler light blue. I am really enjoying your restoration journey on the Imperial. I...

Proper technique to enlarge a hole

The move to a coarse thread in cast iron is wise. Fine threads are generally not ideal in cast iron.

Proper technique to enlarge a hole

https://www.mscdirect.com/product/details/01585322 Core drills are made for enlarging an existing hole. Best used in a machine, but you can do it in a stout hand drill as well. Reamers work too, but they require smaller steps between sizes.

Lets make an all vintage Snap-on tool picture thread!

Thanks! It was obtained through GJ at that huge tool board collection sale a few years ago. I bought three different ones, but this one in particular was unique. Have not filled it out properly yet.

Lets make an all vintage Snap-on tool picture thread!

Picked up this one at an estate sale today. Found it in a random tray in three pieces, missing the nut for the pivot. Fits perfectly on my tool board.

Not making now, but used to be made also by Kraeuter. Or a least branded as such. If you look for used you might find some.

    Help Identifying press

That looks like a really small book press. Just a guess. No idea who the maker is, though.

Show Off Your Antique Electric Hand Drill

Nice! I can't get the link to the patent to connect, but having that 1930 date is fantastic. I appreciate that very much. I need to make a new leather handle and glue a couple finger joints again, but overall the unit is great.

Thanks! That seat grinder did a fine job too. The rebuild is pulling a clean, steady 19+" of vacuum at idle now. Everything else that was done helped too, of course, but vacuum is a great indicator of valve condition.

Show Off Your Antique Electric Hand Drill

I have a first or early generation Black and Decker Vibrocentric valve seat grinder set of that variety. Best guess I found on mine was late 20's to early 30's. Still works great, just used it in rebuilding my old dodge engine over the summer. The only warning I have on those old B&D drills...

Buying a used Bridgeport at auction as a first mill?

If they used grease, you will need to fully disassemble the mill and clean out everything that slides and was greased. The grease has probably made its way into all the oil grooves in the ways, so that will all need to be cleaned out manually. You can oil each fitting location by hand if you...

    Help me re-design this please

Good to hear you had success. Drill press vises don't have the rigidity for the side forces of milling. Keep your eye out for a proper milling vise, even an import one. A better vise will make your machining ventures much more pleasant. Glad you found a way to do it.

Show your Indestro and Duro-Chrome tools

Just a fun little one that I forgot I had. Very narrow pattern, about 1/3 of the width of your standard feeler gages, but long. I have a MAC set that is similarly narrow, but short.

Enlarging a lot of square holes?

I'd suggest a square file in the punched holes. Should not take long even though it is by hand.

    Help me re-design this please

Make the shaft blank (round part) in the lathe, turned, drilled, tapped, etc. Mount that turned piece in one of these square collet blocks in a 5c collet of appropriate size. Clamp the square collet block in a mill vise and mill with any appropriate endmill. Set it up against a stop or with a...
