Mini Split Powers Up On It’s Own

Too bad the programmer of the firmware didn't put a bit more thought into his code. The BIOS in most PC's has the ability to choose what happens after a power failure. Stay Off Always Turn On Always Goto Last Mode (I.e., if system was off, stay off. If system was on, turn back on). :)

How many cameras for my house and shop

Poor quality cameras are a waste of money. Have a look at the video in the news story below. The guy pulls right into the driveway at one house, but you can't read the license plate due to the graininess. Some shots are from video doorbells that are mounted incorrectly so you're looking up...

    Do circuit breakers go bad?

Do circuit breakers go bad? Yes, but not very often. My last house had all of the 240 volt circuit breakers in a box on the side of the house. In Central Texas. On the WEST side of the house. One 60-amp breaker fed all of the 120 volt circuits, housed in a panel inside the garage at the...

    Heat Exchanger Repair?

Is saving a few bucks worth dying for? Seriously. Carbon monoxide poisoning is no joke. You can't see it. You can't smell it. You get sleepy, doze off, and never wake up. :( The heater that guy is selling is worth 10 cents per pound, at the local scrapyard.

Craftsman air compressor filter and switch questions

Do you still have the part of the filter that mounts to the head? If so, then you should be able to fashion something with a filter/silencer from Solberg. Here's a list of stuff that they sell on Amazon...

    Buried Propane Tank In Driveway

Yes, you can only bury a propane tank that is rated for that use. I don't know of the tank itself is different, but the coating is. Had a 500 gallon one buried in my backyard in Central TX.

Which inverter to back feed to sub-panel?

I don't know anything about the specs of a Chevy Volt, but: Are the 12-volt terminals in the Volt rated for continuous draw of that kind of current? 1,500 watts at 12 volts is 125 amps. :shocking: Since there is some power lost in the inverter, it will actually draw more current it is...

Can I control a contactor with a thermostat?

That's exactly how thermostats control 240 volt a/c compressors. The contactor that can switch both legs is less than $10: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06X8Z255M/?tag=atomicindus08-20 Add your 24-volt transformer and wire up the contactor inside a box for safety and you should be good to go. :)

    Insulating garage door

Said the guy that has obviously never lived somewhere that it gets HOT in the summer. ;) Insulating my steel garage door was the best thing that I ever did for comfort in there. Sun shining directly on a steel door in these parts turns it into a giant vertical hot plate. :( You can also...

    garage shelves

Does it have to be the wire rack style? They have this one for less money, rated for more weight, and it has solid shelves: https://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200672570_200672570

    Electrical code changes?

They're gonna say "Sorry for your loss. Here's your check". A stupid policy holder is covered just like everyone else is. The only time they won't pay is if they can prove arson. But then you'll be in a different house anyway. One with bars on the windows. ;)

Wiring for pool from subpanel in attatched garage?

Fixed that for ya. ;) Checkout http://www.troublefreepool.com to learn how to best take care of the pool. Click the "Pool School" button in the upper right of the screen to begin your education as a pool owner. :)

Overhead door slows down when going up

Lubing the track is a fruitless endeavor. You have nylon rollers , not nylon sliders . The only thing you should lube on the rollers is the ball bearings in the rollers. ;)

Anyone know about Atlas Scothguard roof shingles?

Find a different roofer. Yours is trying to sell you a cheap, crappy product, to line his pockets with more profits. Is this a real roofing company or a Chuck-In-A-Truck "roofer"? A lot of those guys just sell the deal and then hire a random crew to do the work.

Best product and procedure to get rid of mildew on vinyl siding?

Check out Wet and Forget: http://www.wetandforget.com/ It doesn't make the mildew instantly disappear, but it does kill it and prevents it from coming back for 6+ months. I use it here to keep the driveway and concrete fence from turning black. Least expensive place that I've found it is...

Cleaning Motor Oil Spots on Concrete

Many years ago a friend showed me a way to get most of it up. Spread some Oil-Dri over the stain and then grind it into the concrete, using a brick. The Oil-Dri turns into a superfine powder that can get down into the pores of the concrete. Leave it overnight, then broom it away.

Garage door horizontal tracks not level

Are you sure that the rails aren't designed to be installed like that? The rails come pre-formed and ready to install and are quite rigid. I don't think there's a way to raise the back of standard 90-degree rails that much without kinking the rails themselves or having a serious misalignment...

Pressure Treated Wood Vs Metal Siding

Also note that all fasteners going into the PT wood need to be rated for use with PT. The chemicals they use for PT these days will eat standard hardware. Easiest to find is probably deck screws. Most of them are rated for use with modern PT chems.

    Sewage pump thoughts

We had a low dosing septic system at our last house. It used a pump in the final chamber to pump effluent out into the entire drain field. When the pump failed I dropped in a HF special as a short-term fix while I came up with a better solution. It only lasted a few months. Tried a Rigid...
