    Need help with wiring

You can run 100 amps to the 2nd garage from the first garage. You should be able to just put a 100 amp plug in breaker in the first subpanel. Most likely the bussing is rated for 100 amp per bus, meaning you can't have a breaker on the opposite row of the panel next to the 100. You can run...

Heating a wood shop, in an old barn, with infrared?

I'd put a propane bottle and something like a modine hot dog.

New Subpanel - Where is neutral?

From the Southwire site: Southwire mobile home feeder consists of four quadruplexed type RHH or RHW-2 or USE-2 AlumaFlex AA-8000 series aluminum alloy compacted conductors. The cable contains 2 triple extruded phase conductors, a white striped neutral conductor and a green grounding conductor...

"URD" is often dual rated as USE and RHW allowing it to be in the building.

    Need neutral explanation for dummies

I think part of the confusion with the term "neutral" is that many people, even electricians, refer to the ungrounded (white) conductor of a simple 120v circuit as a neutral. As most know, it's not a neutral, it is an ungrounded current carrying conductor. But it's become a slang which can...

How to attach subpanel to Concrete

I would mount 2, 2x4's to the concrete with a ramset or tapcons then mount a piece of plywood to the 2x's and mount the panel to that. I've done about 3000 that way.

    POLL: Backyard mechanic business opinion

Rent and run it for what it is. A business. I think a lot of people will look at you in your back yard and expect you to be significantly less than a "legitimate" business. I would. Not that there is anything wrong with that. It could be your marketing ploy and target customer. It just...

Drywaller issue - didn't reintall door openers. What would you do

I'd put the operators back up myself. It wouldn't take 10 minutes each to reinstall the operators. And I'm sure they took them down to do a better job.

    Question on building inspection report

The underlying problem is that all one is hiring (sort of) is a HI's opinion. If a HI thinks 2 prong outlets should be changed to 3 prong, so be it. Now it comes down to whether the seller wants to cave. If he does, the work gets done. If not, buyer can walk, pay for it himself, or live with...

    Question on building inspection report

I do not see this as something that should be written up on a home inspection as a possible deficiency. It was legal for many years until 2002 and a HI is not a code inspection. And I am not in agreement that it is a safety hazard.

    Ground rods

Keep in mind that a concrete encased electrode is commonly referred to as a "Ufer" ground. While it is similar, a true ufer ground is much different than a simple rebar or bare conductor encased in concrete. And it still is not "required". It is only "required" if there is steel available in...

How to wire lighting under steel q decking

I've used these for 30 years: http://www.dillonsupply.com/default.aspx?page=item%20detail&itemcode=07811810 They seem to hold better than other plastic anchors. Or I use tapcon screws.

    Raising Garage couple feet

I would rip the roof and rafters off. Extend the existing walls about 3' and keep the same pitch you have now. Cut all new rafters and be done. 2The 2 ridges would end up the same height. Basically raise the roof 3' and add to existing walls, except I wouldn't try to salvage the old one...

    OSB Interior Walls

It is perfectly legal to have a detached residential garage with osb for interior wall finish. There is no requirement for gypsum (unless it is within 3' of the dwelling unit. Even an attached garage can have osb on 3 walls as long as the wall adjacent to the house has 1/2" gypsum.

    Attached or detached.

    Can you substantiate this explanation?
  17. J

    Attached or detached.

That is not a "fire wall". It is a fire separation required by IRC R302.6. All that you are possibly passing through is layer of 1/2" or 5/8 gypsum board and you are not prohibited from doing that with a pvc conduit. You are required to seal around the pipe with an approved material per IRC...

    Attached or detached.

Well, for starters I'd use the Webster's definition of attached and detached. Because the IRC does not define these terms. I'd substantiate by the fact that Table R302.6 requires 1/2" gypsum board for fire separation on the wall of the garage between the garage and house. It further requires...
