Doors cant be placed within 2ft of main supports?

If the required space IS for a moment frame, then that makes sense, but just to state that it must be placed no closer than 2' from a support column without further explanation is frustrating.

^^^^ I concur. I'd love to know his reasoning. We need Readhead to chime in on this one.

    Holes for Concrete Anchors

Wedge anchor...as I stated before, it's paramount to make sure the holes are CLEAN. I have a full set of hole cleaning brushes from 1/4" to 1-1/2". Brushes and a shop vac work great. I prefer to over-drill depth so if you need to remove item, you can then drive the anchor below the surface and...

    Header for 9x7 Garage Doors

Are the footings sized the same on all four sides? Is this project permitted? With the trusses perpendicular, snow will dump in front of your doors. If you want to match the house, then use the appropriate sized headers and go with it.

    Header for 9x7 Garage Doors

    I'd go with a 3-1/2" X 11-7/8" parallam since it's a bearing header. Your dbl. 2x10's would suffice if it were non-bearing.

    Header for 9x7 Garage Doors

Are the trusses parallel (non- bearing) or perpendicular (bearing)? Roof pitch? Snow load?

The end of gas power tools in 2024

I guess all manufacturer's will be offering 26 HP engines in Ca... 'On Saturday, California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed into law Assembly Bill 1346 that orders the ban on the sale of new gasoline-powered equipment under 25 horsepower. The new law, which requires all lawn equipment to be...

Fiberglass vs steel handled hammers for framing and big carpentry?

In my 32 years of framing, 99.9% of the time I swung a Plumb wood handled framing axe...beyond a doubt the best balanced nail driving machine out there. Mind you, I framed for MANY years prior to pneumatic nail guns. I only wished I knew how many pounds of 16d sinkers I drove all those years...

The end of gas power tools in 2024

I can see it now...just like gas rationing when in short supply. Folks with street addresses that end in an even number will be allowed to charge their battery operated **** on even numbered days and vice-versa for odd. "They can have my gas powered chainsaw, when they come pry it from my cold...

    Holes for Concrete Anchors

Be sure to thoroughly clean the holes to remove any concrete dust as it acts as a lubricant which can prevent the anchor from getting a good bite.

    Garage bathroom and sink

I concur ^^^, so if you have a washer & dryer in the garage, they too would need bollards? I believe his 'county' should maybe be more concerned with piss poor drivers!

Shocking day at the welding supplier

Wow, that's ridiculous. I currently pay $65.08 for 300 cu.ft. argon here in San Diego.

    Bathroom framing with storage above

If you really want to get technical, even though his joist are running in the short (4'-6") direction, being as the floor plywood will also bear on the two short end walls...they become bearing. Guessing the door is a 2'-4" door (33" header) a 4X4 would be sufficient.

    Bathroom framing with storage above

Yes and yes. If you are going to the trouble to shear the walls, go with wedge anchors as their holding power is much higher than Tapcons. I would install 6" from each wall end and opening, then every 32" (every other bay).

They must also be nailed 'in the field'. Nailing schedules vary depending on engineering requirements. For what you are doing, you'd be safe nailing with 8d's at 6"o/c boundary and 10" in the field. You can run shear panels in either direction, so pick which direction requires the least amount...

    Bathroom framing with storage above

Just means make the walls "shear walls". Each plywood / OSB panel MUST be boundary nailed to create a diaphragm, so edge block accordingly. The more weight stored above the ceiling, the more critical proper anchorage to the slab becomes. Since you already own a roto-hammer, you can use...

    Bathroom framing with storage above

You should also consider balloon framing all walls to the bottom of your roof structure, then ledger the 8' ceiling /storage area. This eliminates the hinge points at the wall/ceiling point. Depending on the amount of stored weight you're planning, you may want to shear the walls. I would use...
