30 x48 Garage Gable end details with scissor truss

3onthetree said it correctly AND the illustration shows it correctly. Just because others have done it wrong many times does not make it right! Can you 'get away with it'? Sure you can. Can you 'get away' with 3 lug nuts on each wheel?...I don't want to try it.

    I-Joist bracing

As others have stated, check with the specific manufacturer as they MAY vary. As long as both edges are held inline (ply on top and sheetrock etc on the bottom), there is no chance for overturning. Mid span blocking can potentially lead to squeaking, especially in long spans due to the nails...

Want to cut my own rafters - Need Help!

If you REALLY want to LEARN, I concur with Yankeefarmer. Marshall Gross is a master roof cutter and I learned a hell of a lot from that book and a cheap Texas Instruments TI-36X solar calculator. Cutting conventional roofs was my forte and I THOUGHT I was good, until I read his book, which...

    Saylor-Beall 737-80

Hey Compressed, One thing you need to be aware of is that the inlet to the '31' is 3-3/8" floor to centerline (1/2" NPT) and must be the lowest point between it and your receiver. TJMtl's horizontal receiver is mounted on a mobile base which elevates his drain. Beko also wants > 1% slope from...

    Saylor-Beall 737-80

I believe he is confusing detergent (motor) oil with synthetic. Detergent oil is designed to suspend particulate in order to carry it to the filter where it is then captured. The Royal Purple and Amsoil synthetics for compressors do NOT contain detergents. Perhaps he was referring to Mobil One...

I use Royal Purple Synfilm Recip 100 synthetic in all of my compressors except one old SB with old school seals (they don't tolerate synthetic) Amsoil also make synthetic specifically for compressors.

Looking to Build a New Shop Soon, Looking at Gambrel Trusses. Thoughts?

I see now how I confused you. I used the word "gambrel" when referring to the 2nd floor roof rather than 'standard (flat ceiling) gable trusses'...my bad.

Looking to Build a New Shop Soon, Looking at Gambrel Trusses. Thoughts?

You pull the bearing walls inward 2'-3' +/- and stack it conventionally which would not add abnormal looking height. The clearspan (lower) area would remain truss. https://res.cloudinary.com/engineering-com/image/upload/v1456326977/tips/GAMBREL_FRAMING_dzcqa2.jpg

Looking to Build a New Shop Soon, Looking at Gambrel Trusses. Thoughts?

You can still use a gambrel style truss...the 2nd floor won't stop you from utilizing that. Your original idea would have had to include ********** the gambrel trusses to gain headroom. With the full 2nd floor, you can use standard (flat ceiling) gambrel trusses if you wish, which would be cheaper.

Tools you long for but can't justify

Thanks for that! I checked it out and decided I had to have one, just ordered the Venom HP. We use Loctite 271 on some parts and on occasion need to take them apart...this will be the ticket.

    I found this humorous:

Face it, the man is not phased by his multiple personality compressor, which I find shocking.

Looking to Build a New Shop Soon, Looking at Gambrel Trusses. Thoughts?

Have you considered just going with a full height 2nd floor in the 'man cave' section and stepping the roofline? You could then just go with either a standard gable or hip style roof. That would give you the option of adding windows on all 4 sides if you wanted to.

Hydraulic hose for air compressor? was told not to use it

I would put more effort into locating the needed fitting. I can't believe it would not be a standard fitting of some sort.

Hydraulic hose for air compressor? was told not to use it

"between the cylinders", If it's a 2 stage pump, I believe it would have originally been a 'finned' copper tube to be utilized as an intercooler.

Bending moment resistance: Unistrut vs flat 2x4?

As other have stated, you need to place the existing 2x4's on edge as their strength axis is in the 3.5" direction. I'd leave them on top of the plate and nail them to the rafter also. You will lose 2" in vertical storage height.
