    Switch height - NEC code

Why is it such a knee-jerk reaction to call out the contractor as "taking the easy way out"??? This is garage? Where would you suggest he put the rheostat? That looks like an acceptable place to me, and I don't see any better place to hide it. Maybe the owner wanted it there. It's not always the...

How many lights can I wire on one switch/circuit?

Honestly, going from 3 fixtures to 6 in this case will almost certainly be no problem at all. You are adding less than 2A to a general purpose residential lighting circuit.

    Pulling Through a 250' conduit

A lot of speculation and questioning here, and I'll add. Let clarify this once and for all. Do you mean liquidtite flexible conduit, as in Sealtite??? Or are you talking about rigid PVC conduit? If Sealtite, all bets are off. You'll NEVER pull thru 250' of that. Does it even come in 250'...

    Pulling Through a 250' conduit

100% incorrect. Sucking in a line is MUCH easier than blowing it in, IF you are using the right line. We do it with 3/4" and up ALL the time with ease. Done right 250' will **** in in about 5 seconds, literally. You just CANNOT use the jet line to pull the wire in. You must pull in a pulling...

    50 amp breaker as main.

With #2 WHY waste all that potential amperage by limiting it to a 50A breaker??? Just because you happen to have one?? A 2-pole HOM is like $12. Get an 80 or 90A. *Edit - OK, so an 80 or 90 is like $40. A 50 or 60 is like $12. Still silly to waste that large #2.

How many outlets per 20A breaker?

The "80% rule" is ok for some things, but to put a blanket 80% rule for all circuits is silly IMO. Most circuits can be loaded to 100% quite often, just not continuously (per the NEC definition). And for general use receptacle circuits it is nearly impossible to tell what the load is going to...

How many outlets per 20A breaker?

Correct. Makes no sense. Newer electronics are lowering the amount of power used for the respective device. Even with more devices, electronics really do not draw very much contrary to armchair electrician's thoughts. The ease of installation between the two types of devices or breakers is a...

    conduit

SIP panel homes are anything from a challenge to wire to a downright P-I-A! I'd say pretty much impossible with hidden EMT. Everything would need to be surface mounted. That or grooves cut and then re-foamed and patched, which would a HUGE job. I've done a couple where most wiring was romex...

    conduit

I figured as much. It seems the only real cheerleaders for conduit in a stick built residence are the union boys from Chicago. Sorry, this theory holds about as much water as the chance the Cubs have of winning the pennant.

Re: Another consideration about conduit Not a bad theory. You might be on to something.

May I ask where you live?

    conduit

What you fail to acknowledge is that some of us do not "hate" conduit, and have run miles of it (myself included). Some of us just do not see or agree with all the benefits being touted of using it in a wood framed residence.

    conduit

No, you just said "conduit". I was making the point that not all conduit is the same as far as the code is concerned.

    conduit

I fully agree. People from Chicagoland will ALWAYS try to convince everyone else that their way is better. Nearly 30 years later I have yet to be convinced.

    conduit

You have to remember that Sch40 PVC affords no more protection than NM cable in the eyes of the code.
  16. S

    conduit

Funny how everyone from Chicagoland LOVES EMT, and touts it as the best thing going, and that NM is garbage and no easier to work with, yet the rest of the country knows that it is a joke to run ALL conduit in pretty much any home, and that it is union mandated totalitarian overkill. I've...

I need to pass an electrical inspection

An automatic switch such as a pressure switch or timer cannot be used as a means of disconnect. If the panel is not in sight then a simple two-pole toggle switch in a raised cover would do the trick simply and easily.

I need to pass an electrical inspection

WHY #10?? Is it required for the load? I'd bring the romex into the back of a 4"sq box then use metallic flex to the pressure switch.

Is it okay to run 120V and 240V in the same conduit?

My point exactly! BOTH neutral and sub-panel are widely accepted terms and perfectly fine to use. When you cut yourself, do you reach for a Band-Aid, or an adhesive bandage??? I have a legitimate question for you: What is your actual problem with the term neutral? Why is it a bad term to use...

Is it okay to run 120V and 240V in the same conduit?

I disagree. In my normal life I NEVER use the term "grounded conductor". It's "neutral". Everyone I know is the same. Maybe it's a location thing.
