    Buyers's Guide to Slab-On-Ground Foundations

This is primarily for Texas, specifically the Houston area (also applies out here 400 miles away because we have expansive soils too) but gives some good info on slab-on-grade foundations. http://www.texasinspector.com/Foundation%20Book%20for%20Buyers.pdf

    Recent scores

From garage sales: Cast, not steel - bummer but still useful and not expensive: Catalog rack - missing the light bar. I would like to find a real light bar for it, but will probably just bend up something easy and use an under cabinet light. I have lots of older speed catalogs and such, so...

Q2 for HVAC guys - service on neglected unit

The house we own was built in 2001. The last folks that lived in it did not take care of much of anything. I'm quite sure the AC/heat, air handler, etc hasn't been looked at in 4-5 years. When we moved in, I had to use brushes and a lot of coil cleaner on the underside of the A coil to get...

Craftsman 40" quiet glide roll away on sale

Here's a deal - I have one and would buy another if I didn't already have other stuff I need worse. You can get this and the 8 drawer top for less than I paid for the bottom a few years ago. http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00913991000P?prdNo=14&blockNo=14&blockType=G14

Christmas, etc - New stuff around the house thread

I saw this rollaway at Sears and remarked that it was a good price for a close out and would work for an under bench set of drawers. Didn't think anything more about it. Later, my wife says "we need to go pick up your tool box." My what? I then ran across this neat little VP Fuels cart -...

    Atomic Ranch - retro chic

I found this next to the HR Deluxe mag at the grocery store. Not completely garage related but there are a bunch of links in the resources section of the web site. Who knows what you might turn up. http://www.atomic-ranch.com/

    Advice on pulling feed wire

I'm about to pull the feed to the shop. I have to come out of a hole in the eve, down a 2" conduit and over to the shop. There are two 90 degree sweeps in the run. That part is only 35' total. However, looks like I painted myself into a corner. The 2-2-2-4 aluminum is pretty dang stiff and I...

Seville Classics Lighted Workcenter at Sams

What kind of mud would you use on a OSB to drywall seam

Thinking ahead, of course. I plan to line the bottom 48" of the car work are walls with 7/16" OSB because those walls are most likely to get whacked with a jack, hoist, service cart, etc. I'd like drywall from there to the ceiling. Not sure if there is a more flexible mud for that transition...

Roof engineering question - can't just be normal, have to monkey with the design

I'd like to throw this out to the group and see what ya think. My basic layout (thread in the Gallery) is a 24x40. Roof is a basic design - 7/16 OSB, 15 lb felt, 3 tap shingle. I'm using 10 psf dead and 5 psf live because we have no snow load here and I don't plan to store much, if anything...

    Protection of feeder inside dwelling

If one of our pros could offer a clarification I'd appreciate it - specific q: what is required for protection of a feeder where it runs inside a building. It'd be an attic run from one side of the house to the other. I have cleared all the other code issues for the detached shop feed as far...

Falcon's next shop - build thread

Don't say "roost" - somebody else has that LOL. I haven't bought a stick but might as well start blabbing about it. Might help keep thoughts on track. It'll be slow going for a while anyway. After keeping it in the back of my mind while the move went on, I now, all of a sudden, think I...

Need to span a big space - idea here

From the custom build house going up next door. The area spanned is 22~24' (varies along back wall) by 32'. It's a clear span that will cover their living and dining room. It's a 10' ceiling with no vault. The "truss" runs are 2x12 with the OSB sandwiched in there and the side joists are 2x6.
