Hey, it works now. Brilliant stuff, guys.

    Ad-hoc internal structure

Things progress slowly, and this past summer and autumn were spent doing some useful tasks in the workshop space, mostly related to rebuilding or keeping the bikes running (as well as general maint and construction of various things). Come the winter, it became obvious I'd really better finish...

    BGS Technic tools from Germany

I'm just about to take a punt on a couple of BGS extensions and perhaps a ratchet, so not a great risk and if the ratchet holds up, I'll think about further purchases from them. On the other hand, they look as if some rubbish comes through their purchasing process too, as evinced by this...

    The VISES of Garage Journal

Absolutely. The jaws on mine, I notice, are marked on top from the odd careless hacksaw or file stroke, but are machined flat on the mating surfaces. Given that most of the vice work I do doesn't need gripper marks on it, this will be very handy. I also notice the securing screws are now flush...

What kind of tools have you found in the road??

I still have a very nice lump hammer that was roadside, along with two drums of 10mm cable. Under bonnets, various small spanners and screwdrivers, but nothing worth listing. Also, road debris fairly frequently includes tarps and ropes from the flatbeds of trucks - they come in very handy.

    The VISES of Garage Journal

I've found a little bit of history. The fore-runner of Record/Paramo and the others was the Parkinson Perfect Vise and this Paramo is the dead spit of the later Parkinson no.7, only real difference I can see is mitred-top of the slide on the Paramo. So, the essential base design of this vice...

    The VISES of Garage Journal

Re: Paramo 4.5" vice Interesting - that ad shows a push-button quick-release action. Mine has the normal Record-type lever, so I wonder if the push-button design was to get away from Record's patents.

    The VISES of Garage Journal

Re: Paramo 4.5" vice 4-1/2" across the jaws, 51.5 lbs. There's nothing needs mechanical restoration (the marked jaws might be reversible), just paint, so I'll see if I can find the proper colour, or as close to it as I can get, locally.

    The VISES of Garage Journal

Paramo 4.5" vice At last, finally picked up a decent vice, locally. It wasn't a steal, cost me €120, but I consider that a good buy for the quality and especially compared to the price of an equivalent new one. Hard to tell the story behind this one, but it's not been abused, the jaws are a bit...

    Garage / Man-cave / Work-shop

Take a UK-made yellow 110V site transformer and simply reverse it for 220V out. It will still be 60Hz as local, but you'll likely find the internal PSUs will cope happily enough with that, with the exception of a record deck which might be dependent on accurate 50Hz mains frequency. Are you sure...

New guy inquiring about "recycling" Quonset type hut as a garage

Sounds like it might be a Miracle-Span. Self-supporting, pressed steel deeply corrugated steel panels that build into an acrch, then each arch is hooked over its neighbour, until you get the length of the shed? If MS are still extant, they were very forthcoming and helpful with specs, etc.

    Putting junk together

Damnit, there should be 'like' button on this. Like, like, like, like. :)

    surface rust

I used it just today, on a small trailer re-build. A 30% solution of phosphoric acid, leave overnight, wash off tomorrow, let dry, then two coats of paint - I might do the first coat zinc primer, just for belt and braces. I did another trailer frame with this method four years ago, it was rusty...

Best "Cheap tool" you have ever purchased...

Makita 7" circular saw, bought used 20 years ago. Since then, it's been used in building other peoples' houses and mine too. Never let me down.

    >>>>> UK Hot Tool Deals - Post Them Here! <<<<<

Roundabout here, Nielsen stuff IS the stuff that pikeys sell at the markets. Impact sets are probably ok, but I wouldn't trust any of the rest of it.

    Between 485 & 705 SQ/FT British Garage planned

It's definitely worthwhile. Good lighting and insulation turns a dark miserable hole into a place that's a pleasure to work in, and consequently you get a lot more done.

What is the next tool you want to buy?

Not so much buy, as make. The next piece of shop equipment I plan to build, is a bike lift. Not one of yer fancy-dancy hydraulic all-singing, all dancing red metal ones, but an honest, solid wooden job with four posts and a couple of hoists.

Finish the sentence: "The best tools are made in... ?"

I had a car like that, once. For me, it was Linhof. Nothing else came close, and even a 70 year-old Linhof still feels like something special. Yep. The quality will out.

    AEG Power Tools

Pity it's a bump about the newer tools. Just thought I'd chime in with mine - two genuine AEG drills; one a black-body Atlas Copco SDS two-speed (so I assume just after AC bought them over), the other a light demolition hammer /drill, akin to an SDS-Max, but annoying uses AEG's own fitment and...
