Necessary tools to land a job as a lube tech / apprentice automotive technician.

Lots of good advice here. I know nothing of the professional mechanic world but thinking out of the box I remembered my ace RV mechanic. He's getting a little long in the tooth and creaky in the back. He has more work than he can do and doesn't have a son or apprentice to help with the work...

Looking to buy a miter saw

12" slider with belt drive left hand offset motor. My son has a DeWalt and it's nice.

Looking for saw horse recommendations . . . I’m done!

The Hamilton Robert version is pretty close to the Tony design although Tony's dimensions were a little larger and I dare say more useful. The stay in between the legs was done the same way.

    New Work Van/Tool box/Tow Truck

Very cool. What is it, a Metris or something we don't have in the US?

Looking for saw horse recommendations . . . I’m done!

My key grip when I lived in Atlanta in the 80's made me the best set of light weight handy sawhorses I have ever seen. I think they were based on an old stage set builder's pattern. Unfortunately I forgot to load them on the Penske truck when I moved and I have regretted it ever since. They...

Parts for old Sears / Dunlap drill press?

Nice looking old Dunlap. I have a delta 15-017 that came without a ball on the handle. I bought an appropriate size ball from the hardware store and threaded the handle with matching die. It look more finished and works a treat.

    Best wrenches for Motorcycles

Full disclosure: not a pro mechanic, I like my Stahlwille metric combos backed up by old USA Craftsmen. Sockets are 1/4 & 3/8 drive Facom. I have SnapOn in SAE from BITD when I sold my business and the Facom hold up well in comparison to the Snappies. Onboard the BMW Airhead, I've packaged up...

    Show off your.... Carlyle Tools!!!

Nothing fancy. I like ratchets with metal handles. I bought the 3/8" some time ago on a GJ recommendation and the recent Napa discount brought the price down on the 1/4" to a manageable $20 so I bought it to add to my RV toolkit.

    Looking at a Dayton 1Z707

I had one. It's a well made grinder and well worth the C note. The only problem I had with mine was that the strong torque would cause the whole tool to rotate clockwise. It should be noted that this problem wouldn't have manifested if the grinder stand had been bolted to the floor rather than...

    Marking sockets sizes

I have sockets on Olsa rails. Blue for metric, red for SAE. I can usually eyeball the correct size but if I don't, I have its neighbor handy. Sometime you might need another size socket to gain access to your primary job and it's good to have a few options nearby. Also I think I might try the...

    Carlyle on sale October 2023

Thanks for the heads up 😃 I ordered a 1/4" straight handle ratchet I've had my eyes on for awhile. I have the 3/8's and I like it.

2011 Ford Dually Tire Chuck recomendations

I don't know what your set up looks like on your Ford, but this Milton 577A worked on my 2016 Duramax dually with stock steel wheels and no valve stem extensions. It's available also in a digital gauge. I'm the only one that uses it so it may be a little fragile for general shop use and abuse.

    Most used Ratchet

I usually reach for an ancient SO 3/8" fixed head. I would skip Amazon due to the possibility of getting a fake. Zoro.com has Proto if you would like to try it. Ask them about international returns. I recently bought a $90 wood working tool from China and the project cancelled. The cheapest...

    New Carlyle Pressure Brake Bleeder

It's been a while but I used my Motive the same way. I think I used a turkey baster to **** out the old dirty fluid, then topped off the mc with fresh.

Prevent rot in 4X4 Post sitting in Plastic sleeve it System

End grain is a sponge. Even in dry SoCal the codes required a patio cover wooden vertical support to have an airspace between it and the concrete slab. I can't tell you how many wooden fences in our area were blown over by Santa Ana's when the post rotted. We used a Simpson elevated metal...

best two part epoxy for cast iron?

We live next to a golf course and consequently get a lot of errant golf balls in our yard. One apparently knocked off the cast iron finial from one of the posts. I don't have a welder or welding skills so I was wondering if I could wire brush the rust off and reattach with some two part epoxy...

Pliers That I Find Useful and Some I Don't. Tell Me Your Preferences

Yeah I keep a pair of the large ones in my RV for taking off the sewer dump cap. I have arthritis in my thumbs so it comes in handy.

Lifespan of California Air compressors (vs oiled compressor)?

I have the Mac700 and use it for most of the homeowner tasks you outlined. It's well built, dependable and reasonably quiet. Only possible downside is the small tank but it never seemed stressed by frequent cycling. Would I use it to DA or paint an auto restoration? Definitely not. Wrong tool...
