Upgrading home HVAC - do I need a bigger main panel?

One thing you may run into is problems starting the compressor. A 100A panel would imply a 100A wire run from the utility (though some just run the same wire for anything smaller than 200 so you'd need to check). If it is smaller you may get a voltage flicker issue every time the compressor...

    Another air compressor install

I'm sure this will get moved to lighting and electrical soon but if the motor nameplate says 5HP then you need #10 for the wire and probably a 30A breaker (Though you can try a 20 and see) the wire is not negotiable in the code though. NEC table 430.248 has everything you need to know about...

    Storm Shelter Accessories

The room is 8' by 12'. The walls are 2X6 framing on 8" centers. They are Hilti bolted to the slab every 8" and all the studs have Simpson ties to the overhead joists and top plate. They have 2 layers of 3/4" plywood on the outside that sandwich a layer of 1/4" A36 plate. The walls are insulated...

Use second 200 amp panel as sub in pole barn??

Lighting A and B are the main shop lights and each circuit will have around 1200W on it (what can I say I work late into the night and I like a bright workspace) plus I would never put all the lights for such a large space on a single circuit (safety concern one popped breaker and I have to try...

    Storm Shelter Accessories

My shelter doubles as my safe. I built it to survive anything (I'm in hurricane country so 150mph winds aren't out of the question). It's not going to do any good if a bus falls on it but anything short of that it should be fine and all our important things that are too big to fit in go bags are...

    AR400 for welding table?

When you get ready to sell the rest let us know. There will be a line (with me at the front). As for how to fasten it down I'd do carriage bolts. Just make them symmetric and they'll work for the other side if you flip it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

running ground wire to water pipe?

NEC 250.130(C)1 allows bonding the grounding terminal of a grounding receptacle replaced in a nongrounding system to "Any part of the Grounding Electrode System" and 250.52 makes the metal water piping part of the Grounding Electrode System. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Use second 200 amp panel as sub in pole barn??

For $50 now (out of what is probably a $60-70k build OP can confirm) you are going to screw yourself for later. In my shop (about the same size) I have 32 circuits used before I've even done a thing. They are: Single poles Lighting A Lighting B Outlets north A Outlets north B...

    Running outlets in a garage.

I personally like two 20A outlet circuits for the garage. Alternate outlets on each circuit so that you can have two tools plugged in to the two outlets closest to you and not trip anything. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    upgrade to 200amp?

#4 Cu is roughly equivalent to #2 Al and will do you just fine. See my response in post #38 for all the code references but it'll work either way you want to feed things.

Variety of lines in underground conduit

Each "patch cord" you buy will have two fibers in it. You'll only need one "cord" with two strands. The LC type connectors that most of these use (including the ones I linked above) already have the two strands terminated in a single connector on each end with the proper crossover pattern. It's...

The Bee Hive Garage Build - 3 Car garage with workshop

In my house the answer to this would be "You don't." If it just had to be done then I'd make sure the bedding in the RV had just been changed beforehand cause I'd be using it.

    question about prices for connection

If you have another use for a mini ex (don't we all always have another use for a mini ex) then I'd go that way. Otherwise a 36" ditch witch will do fine. Call for located (Texas one call in your area) and then go to town. If you're in the Entergy service territory then they will pull the wire...

Variety of lines in underground conduit

Variety of lines in underground conduit

Also the shield (especially in this case where the structures are detached) should only be tied in at ONE end. If you tie it at both ends your putting the little foil shield in the cat cable in parallel with the EGC running between the structures. A ground fault in the barn could (would) get...

    Stubbing into pole barn

If you are planning a sub panel then you need a Grounding Electrode System. Two ground rods works or a Ufer. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

What would you do and what's legal to code?

It works fine. A double pole adds the two legs plus the neutral to get zero. This will work in a MWBC. The issue is that it's going to be $100 breaker. If you need GFCI it's much better to take the MWBC out to the first outlet box put GFCI outlets on each circuit and then carry two neutrals from...

    upgrade to 200amp?

That's more of a good practice thing than a rule. You may find that if you have a bunch of other stuff running in the house and then do something in the garage at the same time you trip the main instead of just the garage. Not really a problem just annoying and can set WAF back a bit.
