    Wall height (again)

In thinking about it last night, I also thought about a stem wall below. 2-4 feet plus a 10 ft stud wall on top would still get me to 12-14 ft. My concrete slab on perimeter footings is already poured. Can a concrete stem wall be placed after the slab has already been done? Alternatively, can...

    Wall height (again)

I know it's been discussed a lot, but I'm still conflicted. My auto shop is 44x60 with attic trusses creating a 14x60 second floor. I've whittled it down to two options: 12'6" walls (12" studs with an extra top or bottom plate beyond the 3 standard) or 14' 4 1/2" (14 ft studs with a bottom and...

Finally Started 44x60 Auto Shop + 8x60 porch

Worked out my issues with slab prep and thickness, finally good weather and no glitches. Slab went down nicely, and power troweled to slick finish. Here are the pics from today:

Pros and Cons of using kerosene heater in garage?

I have the Harbor Freight branded torpedo heater, 75K BTU, same as the ProCom at Northern Tools. I use it in my 30x80 shop with 18 ft walls (rented). Heats it well and pretty fast. I run diesel from the pump. I worried about diesel odor, but figured I'd give it a try with diesel to check. I...

Why am I having so much trouble with SketchUp?

Try this, it's what I used when Sketchup stumped me. Works awesome and much simpler. Design a 2D floor plan, then hit the 3D button. Simple. www.floorplanner.com Fred Tulsa

40x60 Shell or 30x50 Insulated with HVAC?

Bigger, no insulation or HVAC. I went 44 x 60 (44 so I could tandem two cars that dimension). I'll finish and insulate initially only the 20x20 corner man cave. Will heat and cool that space with a window unit ac/heat pump for $500 at Home Depot. Will upgrade it to a minisplit later if I want...

Found a big old fan at an antique dealer

It's pretty quiet even when not bolted down. I didn't realize those Gits oilers are still around. Not sure if it was made to open a shutter or not. I have no idea where it came from, some industrial exhaust fan I assume. Not sure if I'll use it just to move air in the shop, or as an exhaust...

Found a big old fan at an antique dealer

Very beefy construction and big. The company that made it (Lau in Dayton OH) is still in business. I sent them a pic and they said that model hasn't been manufactured in over 50 years. They didn't have any more info on it. I oiled the fan shaft bearing and the electric motor bearing front...

    Concrete thickness

@bczygan: Why do you prefer limestone? Sand is used on all the slabs here. I suppose because it is plentiful and cheap. I had talked to a local engineer who said sand or gravel would be essentially equivalent. @NUTTSGT: He shouldn't get mad, but he probably will, human nature being what it...

    Concrete thickness

Met the GC at the site and showed him. He was apologetic for not catching it. He will meet the concrete sub tomorrow and ask him to redo it. Will need to remove the post tension cables and the plastic vapor barrier. I asked him also to have the sub base removed by bobcat and granular sand...

    Concrete thickness

Excellent! Now I have a standard to discuss. Also agree that 5.5-6 is ok. In looking at the site, I see that they used the soil from the footing excavation (mixed with some sandy loam that was brought in to level the pad) to raise the grade of the slab. The form boards are 2x12 so about 6...

    Concrete thickness

You're right on the lift, I checked and my MaxJax documentation says 4in minimum concrete thickness. However, the fact remains that I hired a contractor to pour me a 6 in thick slab. I have no idea what I should expect in terms of variation across the slab, I realize it's not going to be...

    Concrete thickness

So you would accept 4.5 inches over broad areas of the slab when you contracted for 6 inches? The tendons/cables of the post tension slab come to 4 inches above grade, so there will only be 1/2 inch concrete over the cables in these large areas (they are supposed to be at the middle of the...

    Concrete thickness

GC said "it's not an exact science" 5.5-6.5 inches is fine. I said that sounds reasonable, but Im measuring 4.5 inches several broad areas. I don't think that's reasonable. What do you think? He said if Im not happy with it they will do it over. I don't think it's an issue of being happy...

    Concrete thickness

How thick does a slab need to be to support a 2 post lift, 6 in? What tolerance is reasonable? My slab is supposed to be 6 in but I pulled a string level across the forms and the measurements vary from 4 to 6.5 with most falling in the 4.5 to 5 range.

    Insulation

My understanding is that Tyvek is permeable to water vapor, it is only impermeable to liquid water. If so, it would not be a vapor barrier. Fred
