Do I need a concrete pump truck for a 5 slump?

Excellent question. I'm pretty much just a car guy. Sometimes there is an issue with too much information. With the internet you end up knowing so much more about everything than the old days. Once you know, then it becomes hard not to apply it. Who really wants to accept weaker concrete in...

Do I need a concrete pump truck for a 5 slump?

Yes, one of the concrete guys mentioned plasticizer. However, it seems that the local custom is to use pump trucks frequently in these situations. I figure it's best to let them do what they have experience with, which likely will give me the best job. Pricey though for that pump truck. Fred

    Mini-split vs. Window/Wall unit

This sounds like the way to go for a mini-split. I've seen a lot of people post about these "Mr. Slim" units, I'll have to research them. Still a 2 ton/24,000 BTU window unit can be had for around $600-$700 I suspect, vs. $2200 for self installed Mr. Slim. Fred

    Mini-split vs. Window/Wall unit

Not really, my $8500 quote was for a 3 ton and a 1 ton. The 1 ton was $3500, the 3 ton $5500. Your 12,000 BTU Fuji is a 1 ton unit. The Mitsubishi is a little more expensive generally, so it looks like my quote is in line with yours. Fred

Do I need a concrete pump truck for a 5 slump?

I hate to sound ignorant, but how and where is the water coming from that is added after the slump test? Does the truck have water on board? What should I be looking for if I'm present at the pour (regarding water or any other factor I should look out for)? Fred Tulsa

pole, steel, or stick construction for garage?

No problem, IHI. Personally, I consider myself very fortunate to have the ability to spend 90-100K on my shop. Most hard working guys have trouble justifying that kind of expense on a luxury, though certainly there are all stripes. So I don't think it's always cheapness that leads to the...

pole, steel, or stick construction for garage?

I am puzzled by this post. I most certainly am not going with the cheapest price without regard to quality. In fact my initial budget for the 44x60 pole barn was naively set at $50K. I am currently at $90K and counting due to accepting higher quality and function over price. I view the...

Do I need a concrete pump truck for a 5 slump?

Tester was there for footings and will be there for slab (cancelled today for rain). Footing concrete was 2.5 in slump in the truck. Quality guy calculated they could add 35 gallons water. Now, did they cheat on this? Who knows. However, stopping them from adding water after sample taken is...

Is a Nat Gas Generator alone practical power?

The cost of running electrical from the road to my shop, about 300 feet, is looking to be pretty expensive. I have natural gas close to the shop, and I've thought in the past it would be nice to have a back up generator for power outages. What if I just put in a generator for electricity?

Do I need a concrete pump truck for a 5 slump?

Getting ready to pour a 44x60 6 inch slab. Concrete contractor wanted to pour a 6 slump mix. Too wet. I said no more than a 5 slump. He said to pour it that thick will require a pump truck at an extra $750. My general contractor agrees and says pump trucks are routinely used on his house...

    Concrete pour and rain forecast

I canceled it for today. Unfortunately, looks like rain 20-70% chances each day this week. But, I'll wait for a some decent weather. It's too expensive and pretty much unfixable if screwed up. Fred

    Concrete pour and rain forecast

44x60 slab to be poured tomorrow, but weather service calls for 50% chance of storms. The concrete guy says he'll make the call in the morning. I said I need to sign off before concrete goes on trucks. They didn't like that, but I figure if there is disaster, it'll mainly be my but in the...

    Detailed costs of shop build

Oh, Septic would have been $4500, but my ground didn't perk. Aerobic system planned at a cost of $6000 estimated by installer. For comparison purposes, I was quoted $8500 to do a metal roof (as normally done on pole barns, not standing seam which was $12k!). Shingles cheaper at $5600. Siding...

No pics yet, they are supposed to pour slab tomorrow, weather permitting. The costs I gave are firm estimates from the suppliers and subs. I'll put up some pics when I have some! Fred

Milton, That's a great idea, I didn't think of that. How are PTAC units installed/vented? Are they easy to install yourself? Fred

    Detailed costs of shop build

It's hard to find details of the cost of build. I think I'll give the specifics on my build to help others estimate, and to hopefully start a useful thread on specific cost. My build is a 44x60 shop with 8x60 porch, originally planned as a pole barn with slab, but my zoning required footings...

pole, steel, or stick construction for garage?

The cost savings with pole construction over stick built is entirely in the foundation, at least in my area. Stick built requires footings which run $3.50 per linear foot plus materials. Total footing cost for my 44x60 shop with 8x60 porch (also had footings) was $3500. Cost to frame in...
