Follow up to my earlier comment. If you use the totes which have a protruding lip around the top you can create a grid system that you attach to your garage ceiling and store those items you don't need often. Here is a link to an example of how you can do this http://bit.ly/1GuxnMY

I bought a pair of those at Advance Auto. Worked real well for fine work. Good grip and does moderately keep hands warm in a cold garage. I found the rubber coating doesn't hold up long however, will look for these in larger quantities for a good price.

How about submersing the globe in boiling water, maybe the decal or its adhesive is water soluble. I remember seeing similar decals that because of years of exposure began to crack and peel. Maybe freezing it to make it brittle and take an E-xacto or razor blade to it while after removing...
