The VINTAGE toolboxes of Garage Journal!

Well, this box just squeaks in... maybe a few months early, but I bought it in 1991, so as 2012 approaches in a few days, by year... she is 20 now.

Dave, that should weld up just fine. You just need to get it off and over to somebody that can weld up cast iron for you.

    1947 Delta UniSaw Refurb.

Just a quick update without photos... Tonight I was able to set the top back on, and with my custom jig, dial in the blade within .0001 of the miter slot. (front to rear) With that set, I tried the coin test. I set a nickle, a penny, and even a dime on edge about 1" from the blade. The saw...

    1947 Delta UniSaw Refurb.

What I was more curious about is.... we don't have a woodworking forum that I know of?? Well, the paint was dry enough for me to bolt the wings onto the top. I think it's a bit easier to do them on a flat surface and it almost lines them up perfect this way. Much easier than trying to hold...

    1947 Delta UniSaw Refurb.

Thanks Dave... The hand wheels will be placed in my lathe and the outer rim sanded (CAREFULLY... that spinner could grab ya!) Once sanded down and clean, I am going to buff them as much as they will buff out and give them a polish. The center painted area will be painted in the same color. I...

Recommend a good right angle grinder

I picked two styles at Tractor Supply branded as Kawasaki. The first one (a trigger handle, but not a flip switch) was a POS... After burning through that one, I bough the next size up which I had been told was a vastly better grinder. This one has the same trigger (like a powder drill), but...

Bob, I feel like an idiot! I should of known that, they did not even HAVE powder-coating back in the 50's . :spit: I was putting it in today's perspective and did not even stop to think about that!

    1947 Delta UniSaw Refurb.

The paint is Massey Ferguson gray from Tractor Supply. It's a bit more of a darker gray than the rustoilzum paint, and I think it sprays better too. Just another photo, I added the two-tone on the cast iron base. I think once the mobile base is built to my design, the black will help the...

    1947 Delta UniSaw Refurb.

Thanks guys... I am very happy with it so far! This saw is so much nicer than my old bench saw, and that one was a very good saw compared to the junk sold today! (Box store stuff anyway) As for the old motor, I will not part with that, I know what it's worth even non-running! If I can get it...

    1947 Delta UniSaw Refurb.

I have posted some of these photos in my garage thread, but I thought I would separate them out into a thread of it's own. This 1947 UniSaw was given to me by a good friend when he moved. The saw needed work on the motor because it would not spin up to speed. However, you have to be an idiot...

    wood working tools

Oh... I know, given what we have to work with, a $300 gift card to Rockler! And most other woodworkers do not have one!

    wood working tools

The budget sounds great, but to give ideas, we really would need to have an idea of what he has, what he does with what he has, and stuff like that. Does he build things mainly on a table saw, lathe work, or is ha and old galoot that uses all hand tools and cuts dovetails by hand? There are a...

Looking awesome Dave! There is a very good chance that the finish on that box is poweder-coat, which helps with the cleaning of the surface. Those ratchet sets are a great find, clean them up and display them in the top of your box....

    A true New Englander's workshop.

Thanks for the kind words! For me, the detail is second nature... I used to work as an auto repair tech in the auto body field. High end work is what I am used to, so a very good paint job is not that hard for me. Heck, if I had to cash to throw around, just think how nice I could make them...

    A true New Englander's workshop.

I am not really sure with the uni motor... it's the 1.5 signal phase too. The brushes look good and I re-grooved the communicator ring. Right now, I think it may be that centrifugal clutch that is not kicking in. The saw would start up (faster after re-cutting the communicator grooves, but...

    A true New Englander's workshop.

Well, I have been working on the saw a bit to get a motor into her. I had planned to use a smaller motor, but bit the bullet and stole the one of my Craftsman saw to use. It's small for a Unisaw, but it's a nice 1hp motor from the 1950's and I never had a problem with it on my Craftsman saw. I...

More great service from the Rep's at Snap-On

That has been my experience too, a lot of run-around to try to get stuff covered. On my drawer glides, the truck guy was going to sell them to me at a cost close to $50 and never mentioned that they could be replaced for free, without hassle. I am sure the truck guys have less "wiggle room"...

More great service from the Rep's at Snap-On

On top of being awesome when it came to helping me refurb my 20 year old box at no cost to me. (May sets of drawer glides at no cost, even shipping!) But today I had to call them again. My local tool guy said he would warranty out the wheels on my creeper. I had told him, and again in an...

    Craftsman 4419 Ratchet Repair

Whew... I am SO glad that SO gear set found it's way to a lathe chuck, I was screaming "NO" in my head when you were thinking about trading it out. My thoughts exactly on milling it down to fit. It came out great, but I do agree that if held in a 4-jaw, it would be a mint fix to turn down the...
