Putting down a framed wood floor over a cracked garage floor

If you've got enough height this will work. I've done two garage to living space conversions this way. Not because the concrete floor was bad but because there were originally two steps down into the garage and we wanted the finished floor to be level with the rest of the house.

Best roll cab tool box for $5000

It sounds like you're looking for something a little more upscale than this but I'm really impressed with the Husky box I bought for the race car trailer. It's not the build quality of the Mac and Snap-On boxes I have in the shop but it's holding up really well in an environment that, in my...

Photo Request: Clean walls vs Putting things on the walls

I've been trying hard to get everything in cabinets in my shop. I think it gives the aesthetics of clean walls while still providing space for stuff. Pics are in the thread linked in my signature below.

    Air vs battery

i use battery tools at the race track and I'm very impressed with how well they work but in the shop I much prefer the lighter weight and durability of aluminum bodied air tools.

    Possible mold on shop post

I'm sure that there are other ways to do it but PT posts buried in concrete with the floating slab right up against them is pretty standard construction practice for pole barns in the North East. I've been involved in the construction of probably a dozen of them and been inside many more and...

1929 South Bend 9" catalog #22-AB junior lathe value

That's going to put the value around $1K or lower. Machine tools are pretty common in that part of the country and there are going to be much more capable machines available in the $1.5K to $2K range. Your market is going to be someone with a tight budget or a fondness for that particular model.

Floor Jack safety - Jack Rod Stand?

That's a nope from me. I'm not reaching under a car held up by a floor jack to stick that in a pinch zone on the jack.

Installing a file handle- I never knew

I believe the theory is that the hot tang burns the hole out so that it exactly conforms to the shape of the tang so that there's more surface area contact on the taper. Personally, I buy my handles from McMaster-Carr and hammer them on the file cold. Every once in a while I notice that a...

    Between 485 & 705 SQ/FT Mid-Century Moto Mecca Makeover

Gregor - I just had a chance to catch up on this thread. I'm glad things are going well with you and that your home seems happy (at least when trees aren't falling on it). As I was reading the post comparing the satisfaction of using the commercial KitchenAid mixer with the satisfaction of...

Best Way to Mark Bolt/Nut Diameter and Torque on Car - Don't have to lookup

On the race cars I write critical torque values near fasteners with a Sharpie. On my street cars I don't need a torque wrench for any routine maintenance operations. As far as wrench/socket sizes are concerned I grab whatever size I think is needed and one on each side or bring that whole...

Unscrewed the "DO NOT ADJUST" port from HF Jack (2 tons) - help!

First I'd look carefully at the screw and see if there are any witness marks that you can use to see how far in it was threaded. If there aren't then I'd slowly adjust it in until it will just bearly lift up your car. Assuming your car is under the rated weight capacity of the jack you'll now...

Grounding point of cable/phone demarcation box?

You really should have all the grounding run to one point. Cable, phone, sat dish (if it has one) and power should all be bonded together and using the same grounding rod, rods or Ufer.
