Dude- post a picture of the entire door opening so we can see and understand what this installation looks like. Shims are used to make something level or plumb. You don't just use shims as "stuffing" to fill in gaps from poor measurements or craftsmanship.

It definitely is a nice "user" plane. If it had a corrugated sole it would have a bit more value. I'd think you could probably get $75 - maybe even $100 for it.

They are not ALL universal, but several makes are interchangeable - and several blade/attachment brands' design allows different mfr tools to use them. I can't say in particular which are interchangeable though.

If you've got the funds and plan to do woodworking definitely investigate Sawstop. They have a contractor model that I believe is US $1300 or so that would likely suite your purpose.

FYI, there are a few youtube videos on using blue tarp material as filler for plastic part welding/repair. I don't think every job takes special tools and filler.
