Im pretty sure there the sticky back pads, peel off the thin layer of plastic and stick it on.

Id say bad battery also, Is it the old Black n Decker (slightly bulky) one ? we had one in our shop, they were pretty good for back then ! Id definitely replace the old battery and use it !
