    cold saws

I have been looking at cold saws. I will be cutting mostly steel tube and angles but want the ability to cut some non ferrous in the future. This will be in a serious home shop but not a professional shop. Always been a Dewalt guy so the DW872 jumps out. Since I don't know what I don't know. Is...

    New airlines and condensor

So I thought I would show how I was proceeding with my air system in the shop. This will probably take place over a couple of weekends. I am going to be living with this for a long time so I want to do it right and neatly. First thing I did was build a layout jig. Each of the laterals slopes...

    Carrier Infinity issues

In 2009 I bought a new Carrier Infinity heat pump and air handler. This thing has been a real piece of ****. Carrier has been worse. My wife who had never failed to send in a warranty card swears she did. Carrier however can't find the warranty card so it only has a 5 year warranty instead of...

    Southbend lathe

I went and had a first look at a Southbend lathe today. Not a lot of tooling with it. 3 and 4 jaw chucks. Several lantern tool holders and bits. The motor had slowed and started to smoke. So it was taken out of service. He wants 600.00 dollars. What do you guys think? 1 1/2 hp 3 phase motor...

    Fire extinguishers

Fire extinguishers Tried a search but couldn't find anything. Trying to figure out how many, what size, where, and what type of fire extinguishers I should have in my shop. 30 X 48 shop automotive work, welding, and probably some black smithing going on. What do you guys think?

    Atlas Copco LE7

What does the collective think of this compressor? Is it worth 750.00? It appears to be 145 psi and 24 cfm. Digging through the specs has me a little dizzy. It also appears to be a direct drive oiled compressor. How loud do you think it will be and how long to recover? Thanks in advance...

    Campbell HAustell compressor

Looks my dollar per gallon craigslist compressor find has a bad motor. I 60 dollars for a CH 60 gallon upright compressor. It has not been able to bring the pressure up to 120 psi without overheating the motor. Looks like about 300 bucks for a new one. What is the concensus, replace the motor...

Need a nailer for plywood walls and insulation

I need to put a nailer up here. I think the options are nailing a 2x6 to the bottom of the top girt. Or I can continue to the roof and nail a 2X4 to the face of the girt. I still need to insulate the roof.

Thinking about a power hack saw

I need to have a saw for cutting steel in the shop. I don't like the mess of a friction chop saw. Cheap horizontal band saws can be an exercise in frustration. Since I am not in a big hurry I am thinking about finding a used power hack saw. Any words of wisdom out there? Brad

A few more questions about wire size.

Running the last few circuits in my shop. First is the welder outlets. The furthest is 25 feet from the panel. The current welder is 210 amps at 25% duty cycle. I really want this circuit to be fairly versatile, in other words handle expansion and a plasma cutter. Second circuit is a...

    Passed electrical inspection today

Partly on a promise for me to take care of a couple of things. One was where the conduit fastened to the breaker box. He said I need a bushing because of the sharp edge. Is this what he was talking about? http://www.homedepot.com/p/Raco-2-in-Plastic-Insulated-Bushing-4-Pack-1408B4/203671593

    Subpanel questions

Hi all. I want to run a 125 amp sub panel in my shop. I have two 200 amp panels in my garage. One runs the house the other was always intended to run a shop. The shop is 160 feet total. That includes the length of the run into and out of the trench. My plan is to have three number 2 copper thhn...

    So it starts 30 X 48 shop

Spent the past couple years lurking here and trying to do my due diligence. Finally settled on a pole barn. Decided on 30 X 48. I am on 5 acres but it has a creek running through part of tje lot and an environmental buffer. So 30 X 48 was what fit. First came the dirt work. The back left...

    Compacting fill before concrete

I have approximately four feet of fill in one corner of the new shop. The holes for the poles will be bored through the fill and four feet into virgin soil. My concern is pouring concrete on top of the fill. Is there anything I can do before construction starts to help with compaction? I am...
