    HDMI question

Hi all, I'm looking at a new AV receiver (Yamaha) and noticed the HDMI ports each have a screw above them. I'm thinking it's a grounding screw, but don't know what to connect to it as HDMI cables don't have an auxiliary ground cable. Can anyone out there explain the use of that grounding...

So I've been thinking of getting a car/truck lift in my garage....

I'm thinking of getting a lift in my garage. I'm leaning toward a 2-post but will entertain 4-post recommendations. What's your bias; 2 or 4 post? I've got 10GA wiring in place for 120/240V. Foundation was poured with lift in mind. Read today about a guy in Rockford, IL who was crushed by a...

Anyone seen these tool/product chests before.

I picked up two steel chests of drawers from an estate sale recently. Sanded down the backs and sides and repainted them. They had Bausch & Lomb property tags on them, so I guessing they were for eye wear shops for the various lenses and frames. Size 19" wide X 25" X 50" high, on caster...

Help with pool heater low frequency rumble

I live in Tucson, and low humidity and desert climate / flora creates conditions that sometime cause sound to travel quite far. And the lower the frequency the further it can travel. (See pic below). House with X marked on it installed what I am guessing is a heat-pump type pool heater. The...

    What is this tool for?

Bought a few toolboxes today, packed with all sorts of stuff. This has me baffled. What's it for? TIA

OK to have 120V and 240V loads on same 12-3 run of romex?

I am considering running a 12-3 circuit around the inside perimeter of my 24' X 44' detached garage, and would have both 120V and 240V loads connected to it, but very rarely at the same time. Breaker would be a double pole 20 amp. The 120V receptacles would be in 2 gang boxes (12 of them)...

Cutting holes in formica - what's the best way to do it?

I acquired a used formica countertop with existing hole for sink and 3 hole faucet. I got a new faucet and got one with a sprayer that pulls out. What's the best way to cut a nice clean 3/4" hole in formica for the sprayer? My luck with jigsaws is pretty poor, so I doubt I'd get a clean cut...

Is 12AWG sufficient for a 240V water heater with 4500 watt elements

I am installing an electric water heater in my detached garage. Heater mfg (AO Smith) specs it as having 2 ea - 4500 watt heating elements, and that only ONE will be on at any given time. (Fast heat element at top, normal heat element at bottom.) I pre-wired my garage with mostly 12-3 copper...

    Can someone identify this tool?

I recently bought out the entire shop of an amateur woodworker. Most of the tools I can identify. This one I can't. It's about 4" wide, 4" deep and 12" long. Seems like just a bunch of rollers with a felt covered roller at one end (the biggest roller). Also has a cutting edge like a...

I need help! Issue with GFCI breakers being tripped for no obvious reason.

Hi, I have an issue with GFCI breakers being tripped for no obvious reason. I'm hoping someone has seen this before and has a solution or suggestions. My main service comes from a transformer about 60 feet away, into a 200 Amp panel on the side of my house. I had that panel upgraded 15 years...

AFCI related question - Multi wire branch circuit

In 2011 I ran 12-3 romex from my main panel to an attached garage area that I would eventually convert into living space (family room). At that time I installed a 20 amp 2-pole breaker (not AFCI, not GFCI) for this run to pass inspection, despite it being an unused circuit. Eventually is now...

    Wiring for overhead lights

The framing for my new garage has just been finished. I'm doing most of the wiring myself but am not sure of how to wire my overhead lights. I'd rather they be "direct wired", rather than have a plug running to a receptacle I'd mount on the truss. If they are direct wired, I'm guessing I...

Question on wiring inside detached garage - Will this approach pass NEC?

I have 4AWG MTW/THHN/THWN-2 stranded copper wire that I want to use inside a detached garage. Idea is to run it from a 60 amp 2 pole breaker in the panel which is in the detached garage, up through wooden framed top plate (13' high), along the bottom of one of the wooden roof trusses...

Where is foam fire blocking needed for rafters, wall studs with romex running thru?

I'm turning a carport into livable space and will be running romex through wood rafters and wall studs. Holes thru the wall studs will be 18" above floor, rafters are of course ceiling height. I'm pretty sure I have to fire-proof foam the rafters, but does code require me to fill in the holes...

12-2 romex and 12-3 romex on same breaker.

In my new detached garage I want to run romex 12-2 30 feet from the panel in the garage to a set of switches for overhead lighting, 8 lights total. I want to have 4 lights each controlled by 2 switches. Since cost of romex is sky high these days, I want to economize as much as possible. Can...

    Definition of acronym AMLO?

Hi. Getting a detached garage built and this is on the electrical panel schedule from plans. I can figure out that it refers to the fact that the feed from main panel is to be on a 60 amp breaker. But, what does the acronym AMLO stand for? Google only refers to the president of Mexico...

How to identify other end of a cable without a continuity wire going back?

Years ago I pre-wired a number of RJ6 and CAT5e cables from a central location to various room/locations throughout the house. I did a bad job of labeling them at the central location, and today I cannot identify the "central" location cable corresponding to the other end of a particular cable...

    Pre-wiring a man cave

Hi all, I am converting a 20'X20' carport into a heated / AC'd living space, mostly for use as a "mancave". Floorspace currently open to the elements will be bricked up and finished as a normal interior. It is connected to the rest of the living space. I'd really appreciate feedback on how...

Pouring a concrete slab over an existing slab

I am converting an attached 20' X 20' carport (two sides currently finished, one side has no wall, one side has garage door) into another room which will be considered as part of the interior living space (entertainment room). It will then have brick walls added on 2 sides. Foundations are...

Home HVAC question - ID a noise

I have an American Standard 5 ton split AC/gas heater with an outdoor freon compressor unit (Model 4A7Z0060A) to cool my 1750 sq foot house. Installed in 2009. It's a two speed unit that for 80% of summmertime use stays on low compressor/fan speed. It runs on high speed as needs, so no...
