There are often benches on Craigslist, used, which might be an option. You might find one already close to what you had in mind, and modify it as needed. Some are sorry homeowner built, and some are very well done. Some are also salvaged from our lost industry, and commercially made.

Yes that is a good way to go. The rest you will remember, or is just common sense, like chain tension is best snug. Use a gloved hand to spin the chain, and don't pull into the cutting edge. Or use your file handle like a draw knife to spin it.

I have a 1C with the dowel pin jaws and they are reversible. Jason, see if your screw holes taper from both sides?

I think that is a "wagon tongue vise" made to clamp on the tongue for field smithing. They were part of the Civil War blacksmiths kit.

That Reed looks like it's in nice shape other than a little rust. That could easily become your favorite vise, as it is a nice size for most everyday uses, and high quality.

That sums it up for me, as well. I don't do production work, usually repair jobs, that may need weld, braze, bend, forge, cut or whatever, the oxy/acetalene is the most versatile thing out there.
