Good morning all...the regulator and filter are at least 25-30 years old. I have been trying to find the small filter in the water trap with no luck. The number on the filter unit is F20-04-000A D91. The filter is pretty stiff feeling, dont if that's good or bad. Size is 2" long x 1 3/8"...

Thanks to all, that explains it all quit well. I got to looking at the starter and wondered how the heck I even figured out how to hook it all up. Must have done an awful lot of research. probably most came from this forum. Thanks again

It did start and run for about 5 minutes, everything seemed good pump and motor were very smooth and there was a big flash/arc at the contacts. Further investigation into the contacts, they are shot and looked like it had been doing this for a while...all black and burnt looking around the contacts.

Here is a couple pictures of the starter, The red tag is from the base near what I think is a coil, it shows 30 amp max load. Does that mean I shouldn't have had this on a 40 amp breaker?? The contacts are pretty fried. Theirs another number on the coil. Also a pic of the overload protection, no...

RJ Where would the starter be located inside the motor??? because their is nothing on the outside of this motor nor has their ever been.

No this was a big arc and the compressor wasn't up its psi to shut down yet.

The contact area was black and burnt looking so it must have been doing this before I got it.

No the arc occurred during running and it shut down from the arc

I finally got this compressor running (1960s Saylor beall 705) to make sure everything works before I rebuild and paint. Temp. power to the control box #10 wire on a 40 amp breaker. The compressor started and this thing is smooth running...it pump to about 100psi and the contacts in this control...

Started taking the pump apart and got to the centrifugal unloader and found a few warn parts. One of the weights has so much play in the pin hole it was hitting the case breather. I can probably fix that with weld and drill a new hole. But the piece on the end of the crank has deep divots in it...
