I'd definitely buy a full SAE set ranging from 3/8 all the way upto 1 1/2 but it would cost around £900 over here in the U.K.

Do it, or ar least start with the tool roll sets, you could have the 15pc 5/16 to 1 1/4" 715 set from Amazon.com for $300 shipped and import taxes paid. I agree adding the few bigger ones will cost but not £900 if you import them yourself.
My 18pc metric full polish and 15pc satin imperial sets are very nice.

That's why I haven't bought them. They have legit technology and the product backs up their claims and the price is very good for what you get. But they just need to be longer. Might as well keep using raised panels otherwise. On a short wrench like a raised panel you really cannot put enough pressure on it to get it to slip on the open end. (Sure, I know we have all gotten a raised panel to slip, but within reason....)

If your wrench is not long enough to provide the leverage to truly make use of the Grip feature on the open end, then whats the point?

Small bump (getting closer to the release, anyway), but I think it would have been really cool to see the Wright spline on the box end. Looks like the standard twelve point in the photos.
I'm not sure if they actually put the spline stuff into production. The only wright products I've seen with spline patterns are >1" deep impact sockets and they don't look like the pattern seen here: http://www.wrighttool.com/images/wright_pop_ups.jpg.

It's probably not as simple as using a different drill bit, but~
Still saving up for a set.

I got a WrightGRIP 715 set a couple months ago and it's amazing. As soon as the WrightGrip 2.0 is available I am ordering a 952/958 set. Going chrome on this next set, figure it will make it easy to distinguish the SAE and metric wrenches.

I think a "slow boat from China" would still be a faster than how long they've delayed the release.

Though I would have liked to wait and see the new wrenches, I purchased the 751 (satin finish 10-19mm) set last week. It should be here on Monday. I have a feeling they'll work just fine for me. Next is the 707 sae set for me.

See post #20 in this thread:

Hey guys, it's Ty at Wright. Mark sent a comment on our Facebook page about some questions over here on the GJ board. For now, all I can say is that the wrench lengths/body will stay the same, but we have made a change in the open end that makes it more efficient applying torque to a fastener. I'll update everyone here when we have firm release dates and technical specs!

Any chance you could verify whether if the 2.0 will be a long pattern or be the same length as the original WrightGrip?

What's the difference I have a couple original wright grips and see nothing different I'm a huge wright fan but just not big into the wrenches but the sockets are heavy duty.

What are you comparing to? Have I missed where there's been any pictures of the WrightGrip 2.0 ends?

Hopefully within the next two months.

The 2.0 WrightGrips were in production back when I visited last Oct so I don't know what the hold up is. I no longer work down the street from the Wright factory so I can't drive over and ask Ty. I don't want to bug him on the phone but I'll try e-mailing him tomorrow and get a answer as to when we will see them in the wild.

Yes, I have photo's of the full WrightGrip 2.0 but will not publish them until they are released for sale.

Hey Ty, i was wondering if you guys are still aiming for end of September for the release, because i'm waiting to pull the trigger on the Wrightgrip 1.0 and i wanted to see the 2.0 version first.
Any updates you have on the status would be appreciated.

I don't think Ty checks the forum regularly, my last contact with him he said they would be released 3rd quarter of this year. They were in production last Oct when I toured the factory.

but if they're not a longer pattern wrench, why get excited over a redesigned open end? If wright wanted to sell lots of the 2.0 series, they would make it long pattern :dunno:

Based on this thread and other Wright threads, I bought my first set of wright metric wrenches a few weeks ago.

I had a chance to use them heavily for the first time and my first impressions: First, I can confirm they are great wrenches. They fit real tight and they turn hard on the open end. There are a couple things to get used to. One is the angle of the box end: it seems a bit less than other wrenches. It was not a problem, just a noticeable difference. Second is the thickness of the box itself. As others have pointed out it's a little thcker and more stout than other brands. I like it but I can foresee a situation where it won't fit and I'll have to switch to something thinner.

My only negative is that it seemed like a couple of the small wrenches 7mm 8mm were angled differently - like they bent them further down the handle than the large sizes. I couldn't tell if it was a manufacturing defect or they had to be that way to maintain strength. They work fine, just look slightly different.

Overall, I like them very much. I do use my long pattern x-beam gearwrenches a lot as well. Where they fit the comfort of the long handle and x-beam is certainly appreciated.

I think the wright wrenches are winners.

I suspect the speed of bringing out a new line of tools has as much to do with the pace with which they can invest moreso than their ability to manufacture - American made tools are not exactly huge sources of profit these days, and they probably have to space out the investment in tooling for producing 30 or so new wrenches.

Patience! They are not selling smart phones or this months McSalad. They need to first fulfill current orders so they deliver what folks paid for plus coordinate inventory. No one wants to receive a mix of 1.0 and 2.0 wrenches in a set, I am sure this is why the switch may take a while.

I agree 100%. I have a full metric and SAE set. They are excellent wrenches for all the reasons you mentioned, but I also noticed the inconsistency of the box end offset. they are all on the shallow offset side but it's the inconsistency from wrench to wrench that I notice the most. The box ends on mine are a little thick in the hips as well. I also wish Wright would offer a long pattern wrench.

I really do intend my comments to be constructive criticism because I think the Wrightgrip line is a great product but it could use a little tweak to achieve perfection.

Of course no one wants a mix in a set. They could release 2.0 and clearance out the 1.0 of what they still have leftover.

Also very interested in WrightGrip 2.0. I have accumulated about half a SAE set from Harry J Epstein by adding one or more to each order. Love them but have to agree longer would be better.

Just for fun I did a survey of USA brands several months ago and chose the 5/8" size combination wrench to compare lengths. Here is a summary table, sorry for the uneven alignment, it appears that the default font uses a different width for each character:

Some observations:

Somewhat humorous that "standard length", "short", and "long" are entirely different for each manufacturer.

Standard length varies between 7-1/2 inch to 9-3/4 inch for the 5/8 inch combination size. Wright is in the middle at about 8-1/2 inches.

Looking at most of the 'long' pattern wrenches (SK, Armstrong, Matco) they actually are just on the upper end of the 'standard' pattern at 9-1/2 to 9-3/4 inches. One can get the same length of 9-1/2 inches by selecting the 'standard' pattern from Williams, Mac, Snap On, or Proto.

I've wanted a set of those extra long double box end wrenches but the domestically produced offerings are only sold on tool trucks, which I don't have access to. I've decided that a longer combination wrench should work for me in those longer reach and more leverage situations. The Armstrong 'extra long' sets look very appealing at over 11 inches in length, but they are pretty much extinct after Apex's latest corporate move. I plan on ordering a small set of metric combinations from Williams at 9-1/2 inches to try out. They seem to be good quality and pretty reasonable from Tools Delivered.

For me, this also illustrates the opportunity in the market for Wright. The only competition in the longer than 9-1/2 inch length (5/8" size) are tool truck brands or offshore. A 10 to 11 inch 'long' pattern set of wrenches would fit nicely in their line and be quite useful to tool buying users.

Please let me know of any omissions and/or errors in the above. I have tried to give the part numbers of the 5/8" wrenches for reference. This is not intended to be criticism of Wright, I appreciate all they do. Rather this is just pointing out an opportunity in the marketplace.

Since I am personally only interested in USA produced wrenches I did not look up any of the offshore brands. Just a personal preference on my part, so the above is the extent of my curiosity.

Regards,

Mark
