I got a call from the police chief just before noon yesterday with the news of the arrest. A little backstory I knew about, but didn't mention earlier in the week. The guy was caught by the grocery store's camera (stations neighbor to the east) poking around their back loading dock area just before he came over to the station. They think he was looking for a cigarette bucket that had been recently removed because Fareway implemented a no tobacco use policy on company grounds. I guess they had issues with people digging through the bucket looking for half smoked cigarettes. After he left there he proceeded over to the station busted the glass on the Power X pump.

A Fareway employee noticed the guy standing in front of the tattoo shop (straight across the street to the north and 1 building to the west of the station) and called police. He kept an eye on the guy until officers were able to arrive and take him into custody. He was wearing the same jacket as seen in the surveillance footage. He also had an outstanding warrant.

Totally surprised at the age of the guy. I would have suspected a high school age vandal. At least he's caught and off the street.

I'm happy this guy has been found. I feel he may be in a bad place in life. I hope that this helps him get any help he needs. I'm also happy the station didn't receive any worse damage. I know that feeling of having something vandalized after putting yourself into it.

I feel he may be in a bad place in life. .

He's been in a bad place in life for the last 25 years. He also had a warrant for a probation violation stemming from a theft charge from Feb. of 2017. He has a rap sheet a mile long mostly petty theft, public intox and drug related charges. I literally spent 45 mins reading through cases trying find what the current warrant was for. His hearing isn't until next Thursday (3/8) so at least he'll be sitting in jail for a week.

Channel 13 6 o'clock news report.

Is that an eastwood english wheel? if so how do you like it? if not which company is it?

It is. I will say its ok, not great, but not horrible either. Space was a big issue with the old shop and I just couldn't give up the floor space for a traditional wheel. I may upgrade to a nicer one in the future. Its biggest issue is it will flex 18 gauge is about the max it will handle. Mittler Bros. also offers a benchtop model.

I had a local couple drop this piece off to me at the station Saturday evening. At first I wasn't even sure what it was, but it had the Perry Oil Company name on it which automatically made it special to me. Shortly after they left I realized it was the broom holder that the station used as a give away and I had a copy of the newspaper clipping promoting it.

It was kind of ironic when they came to drop the broom holder off I was literally on the phone buying a set of Sovereign signs to hang in the front bay from another collector about an hour and a half south of me. I went and picked them up this morning.

Good to hear that he was caught, but better that he didn't do much damage as there seems to be little chance of restitution from him. Unfortunately, it doesn't sound like there is much chance of him changing his ways either.

The electric chair should be mandatory for petty, but repetitive antics.

Howdy from just North of Ames. Sorry to hear about the damage, but unfortunately Ive heard too many stories like that from the Perry area. Bought a truck there a year or so ago.

Off to page 1 I go. Ive got a lot of reading to do!

Joe,

That is so coool about the broom holder finding its way back to the building from whence it came.

I too think the 3 digit phone number is cool. Did Perry IA have a central telephone exchange office....if so it was probably in someone's house in town.

Back in the day all those phone exchanges were privately owned.

My current occupation allows me to work with all of the national cellular carriers. If you saw the technology at work that allows a cellular call to be put through, you would be amazed that it works as well as it does most of time.

Kinda restores your faith in humanity, doesn't it?
Great story, one of my favorite GJ threads!

I don't know if thats a fair statement or not. I read the police reports everyday and our officers spend more time chasing stray cats and loose dogs than they do taking in vandalism reports. It happens everywhere. This happened in one of the parking lots at John Deere in Ankeny Wednesday night. Unfortunately for this young (under18) thief. he greatly underestimated the John Deere security team and was taken into custody before he made it out of the parking lot.

I really know much about how the telephone system was other than where the building is. It is beside the old post office building a block north of the station. Today it is home to a gift shop.

Ive been thinking about my statement after posting it, and I tell ya what, Im as unsure as you. I worked with a guy for 2 years who told more Perry stories than I can remember, most of them unbelievable, but nearly all were crime related. Now, if you knew this guy, you would see that he is a biased source, since he read the Dallas Ccounty Police report every morning and 3/5 days of the week he recognized someone in it. :eyecrazy: (Hopefully that explains my thinking better.)

Im gonna have to get over that way again sometime soon. I had no idea your restoration was happening and all the while Im just a couple towns over...

It's coming along nicely. From the pics, it looks like the panel gaps are coming out nice and even. That's one of my main complaints with new cars nowadays. Crappy uneven panel gaps.

The Customline is coming along nicely Joe.

Glad to hear they caught the deadbeat who vandalized your pump. I was a bit shocked by his age but I guess they come in all ages.

Wow Joe,

The Customline looks great! I cannot believe the shape that the sheet metal is in. Those cowls look almost perfect! No rust in the seams at all?

Were the doors in the same great shape on the bottoms?

That thing will be "arrow straight" when you are done. One last question, have you completed any kind of VIN history on it, I am curious where it was born, and what plant location for final assembly?

Thanks for the great photos.....keep them coming.

I had to make a quick trip up to southeast Wisconsin on Saturday and on the way back I noticed a sign on the interstate for a 1918 Standard Oil station so I turned off for a quick look. Its in the town of Rochelle Ill and serves as their visitors center.

Wow, another great resurrection of an old building. It's amazing what the old buildings have in the way of architectural style and class, not like the NEW buildings they build today. Glad you decided to pull off the highway and go look.
It's a good thing Dino has a ******** his hat or it would be passing by down here in a few minutes. 40-50 mile an hour winds.

Thanks for keeping us updated here on the GJ, I see your posts on Facebook too.
Great stuff and good outcomes to a interesting winter on your property.
Getting a photoshoot of my Mustang on the property is on my bucket list this year.
You were about an hour away from me when you stopped in Rochelle Ill.
Last time I was there I won a top 60 plaque at the Lincoln Highway Heritage Festival Car Show.
That festival was a good time.
I love cruising west on I88 with the top down into Iowa...true small town America!
