Got up extra early and drove almost an hour to be first in the door at an estate sale this morning. They had a lot of tools. Got some Snap-on but most of it was left there because it was a bit overpriced. Managed to pick up a lot of what they called "off brands". Nice SAE and Metric SK wrench set. A bunch of Cornwell and some Mac.

$50, craigslist. Not a steal, but still a nice snag. 1960s Riztuto Estileto Milano w/ 4" blade. Works just like it's supposed to. I paid what I think it's currently worth. I recently "lost" it on the Chicago River in a boating mishap. So to speak.

I have an 11" Rizutto with the same color scales. It's funny how they have rose in value. I have seen them sell for over $500 on some sites. If only knew that I would have bought as many as I could in the back of the "Boys Life" magazine when they were advertised for $5.99

I spent the morning running back and forth between the house (to keep an eye on my mother) and a couple of sales today. Everyone seemed to be using the eBay method of pricing.
The first stop was near the house, but yielded nothing
The second stop was to the house where I got screwed online last month (story here). I wanted to see if any of the stuff I got stiffed on was still there for this new sale. Nope. All the good tools were picked clean before the new sale except for the Montgomery Ward bottom box that I ended up paying more than I wanted. I also found a body hammer that they missed. I ended up paying $35. (Pics 1-3)
The MW box has a dead wheel, and the inside is caked with a thick layer of grease and grime. The slides are the same. I'll need to do a little bodywork on the locking mechanism to get it to unlock when the door is opened. I may need to take this to a carwash to degrease it. The hammer is cast and only has a raised marking that says "MTM".
The third stop was WAY over priced on everything. I may try again tomorrow to see if they pulled the stick out. There are still a few things that I might want to pick up, at least for parts. I did end up picking up an MG/Triumph fender mat (with roached foam on the back) and an angle jig for my table saw for $20. (Pic 4) (My first car was a TR Spitfire, the mat will go on the wall of my garage)

looks like a decent box and i'm just not fond of the black drawers on a nice red box. are you going to stay with the same colors after you clean it up?
also when you say take it to the car wash do they have a special de greaser treatment? or do you just use there soap and pressure washer and run the grease into their drains instead of yours?
are you going to replace the wheel or will it just clean up? if replacing wheels on these boxes where do you buy them because I might need one or two for mine if they don't clean up and roll great?

makes perfect sense to me. I thought with all the posts that I have read about taking greasy items to the car wash that they might have some special sauce in their water I wasn't aware of.
by the way since you know some contractors throw perfectly good things into dumpsters you might check out some commercial buildings that are getting remodeling done for a good door that makes a great bench top.
I grabbed a few of these from a client that didn't have a use for them after he removed them from an office he was remodeling. they are 8.5 feet and 3 foot wide and 2 inches deep and since he needed them all gone I gave him a little cash and he let me have them all. they are fire rated so weigh about 100 pounds each and if you don't like the cherry or whatever vaneer surface is on them just slap on a piece of hardy board and you have a very nice bench. also the old door knob holes make a nice place to get wires to or from below.

I hit one small sale today that promised "lots of whimsy" and other decorating items. There was tools in the pictures and it was local so i decided to make a stop.
Being #1 in line helped and i grabbed all of these goodies for an excellent price.

Bought eight 3/4" bimetal bandsaw blades at online auction, $ 11.38 out the door. Some are Lenox, I'll have to get hem shortened at $3.00 each, but still way better than $ 35.00 +\- each.

I soak in CLR. Its supposed to be safe for chrome, as long as the rust didn't get underneath.
For smooth surface chrome, I've use (wet) SOS (NOT Brillo) pads and also oil and 0000 steel wool for light surface rust. the oil/soap keeps the wool pad fro scratching. for irrigular surfaces like the RP wrenches in the pic above the CLR sounds reasonable but I've used oil and brass wire brush as well.
For the deep pits all you can do is reduce the ugliness, it's never perfect...
BTW any peeling chrome I just rip off, its a slashing hazard...

Grabbed a few things this morning. Found two new tool holes which I'm absolutely stoked about. One is like three minutes from work. I know how I'll be spending my lunches.
Atkins saw, Superior saw, Starrett hack saw, and Disston saw set. All going to be cleaned, tuned, and resold. May go back for a few more items tomorrow.

That is a Craftsman 20" extension in a 3/8" drive, I have three in a 1/2" but that was my first 3/8"!! There was also a 12" Proto, 6" Snap On and 3" Craftsman not shown. The impacts are stamped Chrome Vanadium in Metric and SAE sizes, are those HF, no COO? Got my first pair of bent handle blues from that box all cleaned up too. The distributor wrench, doe and deep socket are all Snap On.

Here is the result of a 2 day deal with a CL seller. Some of this I already told in another thread.

The end result is an Equipto bench/cart with steel top and complete with Wilton Bullet 3 1/2" vise. A Kennedy hip roof cantilever tool box, and a bunch of small stuff. Various pliers, 2 chain splitters, Craftsman chisels and punches, Snap On punch, Snap On soft face hammer, set of transfer punches and a micro plane. The Kennedy box also had a selection of screws, tape and such. Grand total for everything was $250. $50 yesterday for the small stuff and $200 for the bench and vise.
Yesterday I helped the seller, and elderly gent to re-price a lot of stuff he had really undervalued and a bunch more he had overvalued. Not to screw other buyers but just because he was a genuine person. Today he told me that he had made $250 more than he expected and had moved some of the stuff he had over priced. Most of the buyers still made out as well as I did.

I could have slept in; nothing moving except the FM til 9 or after... I didn't want to go that early to the FM.
The irony is that the two that I had planned, were AWOL. I got a lot of this stuff from Targets of opportunity, except he last one where they posted an add while I was out earlier, and I re-checked and went out for a second quick run with my youngest in tow.
The first ToO was bargain city to boot, I dropped a total of $4!
First factory made lift chain I've ever owned, I always cobbled up my own other than the tilting lift bar I made myself. Craftsman Impact socket, Crestalloy NN pliers, and a long 5/16ths Irwin drill bit.
Plus this Makita Miter/Chop saw. needs some TLC but for 3 of the 4 bucks...
Another ToO got me the Proto WP pliers, and the 3/4" socket.
The FM got me the PowrKraft wrench and the red handled WP pliers (Flat??) and the steel balls from one vendor, The top pair of PEXTO Lineman's pliers, a ford wrench and the smallest pair of Channel locks I own (Almost Tiny Tools Thread level!); smooth jaw No. 43 NN from another Vendor, and the Hasp staple and the bottom long C Craftsman combo on the bottom from two others.
On the later stops I got this from just one of them; a couple of cloth polishing wheels, two NOS 20 outlets, a set of NF chaser dies, and a drawer from an old sewing machine. get enough of these and a guy could make up a small chest of them. I also got the old school turn of the century sockets. Not sure what make I found no makers marks on the 1/2 extension after a quick cleanup. I might find some bare traces on the box, or maybe someone will OD it by its construction since that is pretty unique.

Good score on the chain lift Outlaw, I unfortunately borrow my neighbors the few times I use my engine hoist...I would love to find a factory one like that!
Those sewing machine drawers are excellent, here are some I saved from an old machine I got last season. Just waiting to find "the" spot for them.

The first sale I went to today was a bust.

So I went back to one of the estate sales from yesterday. I was hoping that a couple of things that were overpriced yesterday would still be there. Nope, gone. I missed out on a roached Cman 1/2hp motor (115.6962) I wanted for parts (they originally wanted $30 for it) and a non-running messed up 1/3hp block grinder (didn't get the mod#) with missing pieces (yesterday's price was $35). Both were gone. Oh well, someone else overpaid for items that needed complete rebuilds with discontinued parts before they could be used.
I did find a few things among the tailings. I picked up three 6" c-clamps (the only ones in a large pile that weren't bent), a nearly full can of amber butcher's wax (hard to find in my area), and nine acrylic 5" dia homemade pegboard shelves (pics 2&3). I'll put some retired oil cans or mini vises on them to display in the shop. The clamps will get the same paint as the others I did recently.
All for $12 (yesterday it would have been closer to $40-$50)

Went to a local "Estate" garage sale last weekend. Seller's listing said because of the CC&R's for the housing area there would be absolutely no sales before 8AM. Parked out front and watched as the professional garage sale prowlers showed up at his door early wanting (demanding) in to "get a look" as he was trying to set up. They got really PO'd when the seller told them NO. Then the seller wouldn't haggle with them and stood by his prices which were more than fair for the items he was selling. I bought a set of craftsman gas torch valves, hoses and tips in a craftsman welders box for the posted price of $40. I'll post pics tomorrow.
