I snagged a Craftsman mid-chest and a box of big wrenches this past Saturday, the wrenches look like they may have spent some time in a road box. I have already cleaned a few and they actually cleaned up fairly nice.

$25 later and I got a Baldor 612R. Story seems to be the last machinist that had it, welded a shaft extension to the main shaft to run his angle grinder disks.
ePUuLf8.jpg
I'm guessing that welded on collar is factory and you'll find the same thing on the other side.
If you unscrew the disc on the right side very likely nothing at all was modified.

craigslist of all places. i went to get some tools from the guy and he offered it at 50, i didnt beat him down from a higher number. the pile of tools was worth more than i paid for everything or the box was and i got free tools. not sure how you want to word it.

got it all cleaned up and cut down some rubber gym floor i had for a top surface.

Based off the partial view of the markings--that box with the 94X- logo would make that box originally a Navy or Marine 900-Division tool box used by Ground Support or Avionics technicians with the air wings. They almost always had supplemental locking slides placed on the front and ball-bearing slides were almost never seen as the ball bearings could become FOD. Hope there isn't any of the greasy rubber matting inside used to make the tool positions easily identifiable..

the guy said he worked on the flight deck. all drawers but one had blue foam (cheap) that only had tape here or there. they cleaned up ok. not **** and span. drawer liner takes care of this issue. one drawer was done in black, and it had some type of adhesive tape on it. scraped it out with a 5 n 1 but you know there is a mess there. drawer liner looks great.

this is the second box ive bought from a military guy that has had the lock taken out. he said they have to run a bar vertically to guarantee closer of the drawers and use a pad lock to secure their tools.

really ruins the box, IMO. luckily this one just has a couple holes up top and 3 at the bottom. ive turned down some that have had multiple chunks of steel bent this way and that that have been welded or moved slightly when the metal gave out on the box so there are 10 holes in the top plate and 10 in the lower part of the frame.

for the money im still smiling. i like stuff thats beat up. dont have to worry about dinging it.

That looks an awful like a re-badged Parks 12" planer.. Nice piece--Yours looks much cleaner than mine--but they work wonderfully..

That is a rebadged Parks, craftsman used them until the 60's when they swapped to Belsaw. There has been one on our local cl for months, he's asking $300 but the stand is 2x4s and plywood and the machine has home made covers instead of the ones posted here.

Usually when we say"you stole that!" it means you got a great deal. In this case, given the military markings, the flight line comment and the outrageous low price, it might be an accurate description of its origins! Military surplus is supposed to be disposed of through the DRMO...

Saw an ad up on local CL for a rotabin. Checked it out and found it to be around 4 ft tall, with five (5) round tray bins of about 30 inches diameter. Made by Frick and Gallagher in Ohio.

Couple of items of interest and that is this one has a very heavy round compartment that sits/spins on top and has 6 section with each section having 2 snap out/slide out metal storage containers. This can be seen at very top in the CL ad picture.

The other item different on this one is that at bottom of all the round trays and the heavy round storage compartment, is a groove. There is then a handle for each that runs underneath the trays/compartment through the center post and secured to the post with a nut. This can then be used to keep the metal trays from spinning when it is in the groove, but when handle is pushed down, the individual tray can spin freely.

Also, ended up buying 2 Stanley Bailey No. 5's with one being different type than other. Pic 2 & 3

I like those Klein combination wrenches.

Still haven't gotten around to posting up the weekend finds but I responded to a CL post and bought all the hand tools and misc. hardware. The girl's father passed away and she's selling off his stuff a little at a time. I passed on the old power tools but grabbed the welder with a mask thrown in. Her boyfriend kept a Williams ratchet and misc. sockets I was after

Couldn't be too upset though, at her price of $30 I took the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Additional $20 for the welder

Highlights were Snap On 3/4 ratchet and socket, s-k and Napa pieces, nice K-D snap ring pliers, and like new impact driver.

How did I do on the welder? Anybody have experience with this one? I'm not too fond of HF.

Great score, 3bay. My Dad had a similar cheapo welder. It worked decently, as long as you're not trying to weld anything big.

Aaaaand this happened within the last couple weeks.

I got the Bridgeport for a really good price so I broke down and paid a fair market price for the South Bend. There's a lot more tooling then what's shown too.

I have had one of those HF welders for a few years and for general use around the garage I've had no complaints. Welded a lot of brackets and different projects up to 1/8 inch. For $20 you got a deal.

After a long break from sales I finally found some time to hit an estate sale. Picked up an old Armstrong pipe vise tripod and a nice piece of aluminum angle iron. Spotted the tripod buried amongst piles of garbage in the back of a garage. Seller said if I dug it out of the wet pile of junk it would go cheap. $10 was worth the digging and $2 for the angle iron. Seems like everyone else is finding some nice stuff. Glad winter is finally over.

Man that is an awesome storage unit. I have a small cheap one but love the rotary concept. If you restore it you should post on a thread to show the after appearance.

Small finds are always appreciated. Dug a 1949 Blue Point Supreme double open end wrench in a bin full of junk tools and paid $1.50. Nice little fix for a tool junkie.

Y'all may not be much on this but I love them.
Picked up an authentic Nathan Airchime train horn. This setup is a K3HA, used on most of the modern Union Pacific trains nowadays.
Paid $200.

Thanks for the comments on the welder guys. Couldn't complain about the price, I'm just trying to feel good about something Harbor freight for once. :yikes: Won't know until I try it out I guess. By the way I've never welded. I have another small setup I never tried out but this one is standard voltage so that's cool.

That is a rebadged Parks, craftsman used them until the 60's when they swapped to Belsaw. There has been one on our local cl for months, he's asking $300 but the stand is 2x4s and plywood and the machine has home made covers instead of the ones posted here.

Hey, Nine, that's what I thought too when I saw my planer. But no, that stand is home-brew, no doubt in my mind. It has rivetted, gussetted joints at some places, fair to poor welded joints at others. Taking the long view, it's clearly bed frame iron! Even the belt guard is homemade, though better - probably gas welding on the expanded metal. The casters are good, heavy units, but clearly not fit properly as they would be from a factory - just flat plates welded to the bottom.
At a glance it looks like factory, especially since the whole thing has been painted the same color, a hammered silver. I can't complain; it's good and sturdy and well designed, and as good as I could have done (except for the worst of the welds!)

So now I've got to go look up Parks. That's a brand I don't know.

Boyz, I scored today.

Picked up my $100 Powermatic 1200 drill press today (not very light) and made a second stop at an unofficial estate machine shop sale.

Found a brand new untouched Rock Island vise dated '57 under a pile of old '60's newspapers along with a bunch of Starrett, a beautiful vintage articulating Dazor shop lamp, '50's oak shop stool, some misc tools but the best part was 100+ lbs of large rough milled old growth teak and ebony wood (huge pieces). Everything for $70 including the vise.

I do feel a little guilty however I did pass on a 3/4 HP Baldor buffer for $150 which was a mistake.

Great score on the X-Y table. I'm sure it will be happy to be reunited with the drill press you picked up earlier.

The second cabinet was a good grab as well.

Cool drill table, did you get the vise jaws that come with it?

I bought a beat up adjustable angle vise for $5 from him but i ran out of space in the post. You can see it peeking out from behind the table. I'm looking for a real nice vise for the table. Question is how to mount it as the Rockwell's table is unscathed. I'm thinking of mounting the 2 axis table to some substrate, metal or wood, and just putting an antis-skid mat between it and the drill press table.

The table of the rockwell is the one shown in your first post? If it is cut some strips of wood to fit in the drip tray and screw a sheet of wood to them. Then you will have a little lift off table that you can bolt the x-y table to.

For the vise on the x-y table have a look at this post http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showpost.php?p=3969119&postcount=16204 maybe they are still kicking around at the old welders place?

Cwazy, GREAT idea I'll try that. I do not want to drill that table!

Joe - The seller may be sad, but he can take heart that they went to a good home and if passed on will go where they'll be appreciated.
