I went out today to look at an advertised "big old vise". It turned out to be a Parker but was so badly damaged it was basically a boat anchor.
I did buy this bucket of stuff for $10 though.

It turned out to be full of US tools, copper and brass fittings and plugs.

I also found this old Camillus knife at the bottom. Figure that's worth the ten bucks alone.

The second stop yielded these two gooseneck light fixtures. I was told they came off a large roof mounted sign. Only cost me a buck each!

I managed to go out solo this morning for the first time this season. Didn't find anything in the way of yard sales so I headed to the flea market.

First and most expensive purchase of the day was this old hammer for $4. Can't quite make out the name.

The next picture is a combination of a few different sellers. I forget what was what. Overall total was another $9. The one good end mill should be worth about that much. The tap handle is a Millers Falls and actually works despite being rusty.

Whats's this used for? It was only .50 and seems to be in decent shape so I grabbed it.

Finally got around to taking some photos of last weekend's stuff.

Auto Body Tool set with Fairmount, Porter Ferguson, Proto, Sioux, B&D,Stanley and a bunch of others.
$50 for everything

Included a bunch of free stuff like the S-K socket box, hein werner porta power parts, lumber, a nice toaster oven, and more. The elderly gentleman and his daughter couldn't have been nicer. I think they were happy I showed up at the end of their sale so less work they had to do.

Good hunting to you guys!

Love the gooseneck lamps, I'm looking to make one for my shop man-door. I have a decent shade, just need to bend up some conduit.

Good scores guys, I slept in this morning cause there was only one sale listed so hopefully you late posters will have lots of good stuff to show us!

Just for good measure, here is the motor and stand. It's got compression and all the parts are there. It's just gonna need some love and it will run again:thumbup:

Johnson TD-20. 5 hp. twin. Original gas/oil mix was 1/2 pint to a gallon of gas. I had a couple of these.

OK my day was not bad. Most was from 6 planned stops, (11 mile route, maybe another mile or so for TOO's...)

The guy was asking $20 for all: Three axle nut sockets, Seal, Freeze Plug, and Bearing race installation tools, Vacumn Switch Socket, Air adaptor for a spark plug hole and later I found the NOS Speedair auto drain, and got him to include it for the $20.

a TOO stop: Coin dispenser; remember these? $3... Craftsman Flex head 3/8 Ratchet w/Quick release, plus SK & Klein #1 Phillips drivers for $5; SS valves .50c ea, chuck $1, tape .25c and another TOO: Sony Security IR Camera for $1. I If I can download he manual and it works, this may be the score of the day... these seem to run $1-2K!

attachment.php

Schlage Lock w-Keys$1; A Movie $1 - Never saw this on so worth ir still sealed... and the Bronze 5 in Jaw caps were tossed in with the next two items from another TOO with before and after WW pics. these caps appear to have been used once, but never actually installed... The guy told me he'd sold the vise, and forgot to give these to the buyer...

A very sad looking 1/3 HP Block. Both guards have breakage, one is bent to boot, but it sings when run. Only $10. I'll probably relegate it to wire wheel work to replace the under-powered grinder I brought home from my Dad's place last year.

attachment.php

The remnants of the label.. not sure when this one was made, there is no date stamp on the bottom plate or under it...

attachment.php

And $20 for this Milwaukee PortaBand. it needs a new cord, and the stop bar, but those are not hard to get. So $30 all told for the saw, grinder, and 5" Vise jaw caps.

And I took my daughter back out to the place I got the Lock from, and she got this desk I'd told her about. She wants this as a vanity. It needs some TLC, but it's a VERY well made and probably expensive piece when it was new. but for $10 it's a go... She wants this as a vanity. The label is "Davis Cabinet Co. Nashville TN." - Have to Google that, but I suspect this is 60's

While there I found this magnifier light stand, and again for $5, I wasn't leaving it behind... then lastly my daughter also found a short directors chair she had to have... $2. (no pics, sorry...)

Nice find on the Porta-band. I was hoping to find one today at a contrator's liquidation sale, but I only walked away with another Block grinder instead. This was the 2nd day of the sale and most of the good stuff was already gone. Pics of my finds later.

Great score on that Porta-band saw. Been looking for one of those for myself and it looks like the coin dispenser came with change already in it.

So, this morning I was excited to wake up early to visit 7 planned stops. This is the first time in weeks (months) that I've had a choice of sales to go to. It was just like Xmas or Opening Day. :bounce:

The first stop was a contractor's liquidation sale. I missed the first day due to family obligations, but I was hopeful that there were some good things left. Two things I wanted to try to snag were a Porta-Band and some Staging. Both were sold yesterday, as were many of the big tools. What was left were things I didn't need or were worn out. At first I thought I spied an 8" vise in the back, but when I got back to it, it was a chinese import. BUT, hiding behind it was a Craftsman Block grinder on an original stand. I don't need another one (my 6th), but it went home with me anyway for $40. (pics 1 & 2)

Stop #2 lied about having tools.

Stop #3 was a guy I've been to before. He's an occasional picker that has a sale two or three times a year. He usually doesn't have much I'm interested in, but I always walk away with something. Today it was an un-named 2-1/2" c-clamp for $1. (top left of pic 3)

Stops 4, 5, and 6 also lied about having any tools. (Hmmm, sensing a theme ?)

Stop #7 didn't even open their doors or put out any signs.

At this point I was so frustrated that I decided to go to a sat. Flea Market just to get out of the truck for a while.

The FM wasn't too bad for a change. I found the following items at 3 different tables for a total of $8.
- Peterson/Dewitt 5WR vice grips
- SnapOn #A177 panel tool
- Homelite #A-92617 cast 5/32" chain saw file holder w/file
- Craftsman Crown Top "Hollow Set Screw Key Assortment" #46696 in blue pouch (complete)

All told, I spent $49 and almost 100 miles in gas. It was frustrating.
It really annoys me when people list tools just to get someone to show up to look at their baby items. What happened to truth in advertising ?

Outlaw, cool saw. Never seen one. Why go to the bandsaw when the bandsaw can come to you.

Thanks guys.

3bay, I'm surprised, several have been posted in the past and they are fairly common.

Welding fabrication is probably where they are most used, and that is why the cords are almost always rotted out. The arc from the welder deteriorates them. Same for 4" mini grinders. I've replaced the one on my first Portaband and mini grinder at least once each.

No sale, my uncle was over for a family BBQ and brought me these items. Some was my Dads from when they shared a shop.
The floor jack is a 2 ton Heim Warner, it will need some seal work. The other two are air over hydraulic.

I find the best are Estate sales, and sales in older areas that list "tools" in their ads on CL, but as Jake noted, CL liars abound...

I also watch for "boxes O' Junke" at all drive bts. I'v been surprised by some of the things that surface. adn jsut becuse that ahve baby item front adn center, look past them what else is out, ot even visible in the garage. ASK...

Is the XYZ for sale? Got any ABC's? I've been walked back to some treasure troves...

I seem to put my blinders on around power tools for some reason. I know I've overlooked some awesome power tool posts in these threads and Lord only knows what deals I've walked passed in person. :willy_nil

The cause of this? I don't know, maybe addiction to hand tools. I have to stick with what I know but can't stop learning thanks to you guys and this site.

Made the rounds this morning I must have traveled 20-30 miles and stopped at about 10 sales. As is usually the case the first sale is where I found all the goodies and the rest were nothing.
Most of the sockets are SK with one or two Snap On , craftsman, Proto and one Bonney.
The Makita is a 9403 and runs great and the charger seems not to have been used. Paid $32 for all.

Thanks. The funny thing is I own the smaller Makita belt sander and I was at a sale last week and I had bought a bunch of new belts that I thought fit the smaller sander but they were the wrong size. Take a guess what they do fit now.

Guys,

Can you tell me if this is an older Craftsman drill press? I know the image is blurred but I think it is aCraftsman label across the top.

Local guy is closing up his auto body shop, not sure what this would be worth. I've called a few times today but no luck yet

would $50- 75 be a good pic if it works well?

Thanks

Usually the dead people have the best stuff:shocking:

I don't mean to be grim but most people only part with items they no longer need...when they no longer need it. When the kids get older, you dump the clothes. When you die, everything goes

Estate sales are usually one of the final chapters in a estate liquidation process for people that have spent a lifetime accumulating "stuff".

Yes, it's the one in Kensington. Easy to get to. It is open tomorrow as well.
They still have a lot left, but well used. The prices weren't too bad.
Not much in the way of vintage tools.
It's all contractor tools from a large(ish) company.
They still had ladders, a few gang boxes, air nailers, big hand drills, a bunch of torpedo heaters, and a bunch of other power tools left this morning.

I do tend to find more tools being sold by older men. The older crowd also tends to have much higher quality tools as well. I have got some stuff from younger people though but its very hit or miss. Its usually tools they inherited and dont want, or they changed careers and are selling off their old work tools.

I've noticed that if the garage sale is in what I call a "yuppie development" ( a planned community of cookie cutter houses all built at once) that tools are nearly non-existent. Its almost all baby items and holiday decorations. If there are any tools, they are all but certain to be Chinese made "homeowner tool kits" with half the pieces missing.
When I go to a garage sale, I prefer to see an older house as that means there is a good chance the people have lived there for decades and have collected lots of items. Finding one with a run down shed/barn on the property usually means a goldmine of goodies for sale:rocker:

Oh, and the absolute best sales to find are hoarders. I've been to a few where the homeowner died and the family saw the mess and just opened the doors and let people have at it. LOOK EVERYWHERE. I once found a drawer full of tools and shotgun ammo under a bed in the master bedroom. Sales like that are usually dirt cheap too. The people just want the house cleaned out and practically give the stuff away just to be rid of it.
Foreclosures/evictions are good places to score deals too. Snagged a StackOn gun cabinet at one for $20 because the tenants were getting the boot and they had no way to move it.

Don't let the old guys fool you, they are my main competition around here. I'm 42 and it seems most the guys beating me to deals are at least old enough to be my dad...
