I got a call from a co-worker who was a garage sale who knew I was looking for an old vise. She picked up this nice craftsman vise for $20. It has no cracks, welds or large damage. The swivel pin is slightly bent but I will fix that when I repaint. Who made this vise and how old is it?

Made by rock island. Check the top of the slide ~ half way back it should be stamped year made. 4", great deal if nothings cracked.

I just had a thought! (didn't you see the smoke? :lol_hitti)

I wonder it I got the Proto 5449PK repair kit and had a machinist turn down both ends of the gear head to the diameter of the old one.....would it work?
Hmmmmmmm........

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001HWCQLQ/?tag=atomicindus08-20

.
Take the broken gear and hit it with a file to see how hard it is. they may ahve heat treated the thing deep, or just a surface heat treat for wear mostly...

Anything can be doen, but the question is will it be worth it?

I don't normally post in here but I've got to share what I got at the weekend. I'm quite excited.

First off I got a few things I don't have pictures of:

£8 - Moore & Wright 0-25mm micrometer
£0 - Moore & Wright 0-25mm micrometer
£3 - Moore & Wright 25-50mm micrometer
£10 - Moore & Wright 300mm vernier caliper
Then the exciting one.

I went to a stall who is a trader who does house clearences and looked through a box full of plastic tool boxes. Most empty, some had fittings, you know the sort. I picked up a box with a pair of ratcheting crimping pliers in them. I've been after a set for quite a while so naturally picked it up and ended up paying £4 for them.

DSC_0043.JPG

When I got home I had another look at them and the dies are perfectly made so thought i'd find out a bit more info on them.

Well that's fine if you have a use for them. Personally I would be selling and buying a cheaper set for my own use. Though I used to be in the electronic business and then i would have held on to them.

No matter what the plan is that's a helluva score. [emoji106] [emoji106] [emoji106]

I had a fun weekend. Saturday was taken up with family stuff, so I figured it was a bust for any sales, but after church on Sunday I headed out and found a sweet backyard sale. The seller was clearing out the contents of the property that he purchased, and the yard and garage were full of old tools, fasteners, tool boxes, and other assorted clutter that accumulates after decades of life. Much like many of your garages!

It was 2:30 on a Sunday afternoon, so i didn't have high hopes for finding anything nice, but I was not to be disappointed. Plus, I was able to get some great prices, since it was so late in the day.

My 8 year old son and I had a great time combing through the clutter, and he found 2 rifles to come home with! Some of the highlights are the Park toolbox:

The Simplex screw jack. I don't have a need for this, as I already have 2 Swett 12 tons screw jacks, but I love it, so I added it to the pile.

And last but certainly not least, a Chas Parker 973 1/2 vise! I can't believe it was not scooped on Saturday! Paid $25 for the vise and $15 for the everything else!

I am definitely looking forward to restoring the vise!

Stopped by an estate sale this morning and picked up a few ratchets.

IMG_20150619_100201129.jpg

Paid $6.50 for the three. The 3/8" Easco is completely locked up but looks to be in good shape otherwise. Hopefully a little cleaning will get it spinning again.

There was also an older Craftsman vise there for $45 but I only had $35 on me. I put a 'bid' in for $30 so they'll call me before doing the 1/2 price thing tomorrow. I assume someone will pick it up at $45 though.

Just posting an update with good and bad news.

I took apart the 3/8" Easco to find find everything intact, just packed with old dried up grease. While cleaning everything up I lost the detent ball. I've already ordered a assortment off ebay to get it back together..

I got the vise though! Got a call mid-day Saturday to come down and get it. Ended up getting a few other things for 1/2 off as well. No pictures of the vise at the moment. I'll post a few here and to the vise thread once I get it cleaned up.

was this the ES on Pershing? I could not attend.

That'd be the one. I usually don't even pay attention to the ones ran by "Estate and Garage Sale Managers" as 90% of the time the prices are crazy high and they aren't even real estate sales.

There was still a ton of good stuff there when I left Saturday. I kind of wish I had stayed for the bag sale.

I picked up this Cabinet yesterday off a CL deal. It wasn't a screaming deal but $75 with the assembly manual still in it isn't a bad deal.

Sorry about the mess we are prepping for a garage sale this weekend.

it is about 7.5'x3'x2'.

Went to a sale Saturday advertising tools starting at 9 am. When I arrived all the tools were gone. Old timer said a few early birds bought everything around 8 am. When I turned to walk away he offered to allow me in the basement to look at the rest of his tools. He is moving down south and his kids didn't want anything. I bought at least 10 boxes of stuff and a nice snap on carry box. Got it all for a hundred bucks. Here's a few pictures of the first box

What would these extendable alligator clips intended for? I'm guessing hobby or electric work.

I was looking for this thread the other day and couldn't find it to post.

I picked up these on Friday.

ImageUploadedByTapatalk1435111002.391124.jpg

The craftsman boxes for $225, the 3 metal light reflectors, Henry Disston & Sons Disston Junior saw, and file for $15, and the little card file cabinet for $20. Anyone know anything about the saw?

They look good in my garage.

Still a lot of organizing to do.

So many posts while I was away from the computer, almost all you guys **** for one reason or another!

Couple highlights, Shanny and the swage block, love the "reverse haggling", I had to do that with my Hey Budden anvil this time last year.

T4runner hit it big several times, the $200 score was major, even though you "reverse haggled" yourself.

Dave *****!

Lu Max, I was thinking ~$1k was just an okay deal until you sold the sander and came out with the Baldor for $250... SUCKAGE!

Jim Langford, what about simply welding a bead where the teeth are missing and grinding/hand filing them back in?

Bubinga, glad the tests came back in your favor, best wishes for a long and prosperous life!

Outlaw, what brand are those button dies and are they for sale/trade?

Mike Paxton, great score on the button press, what are your plans with it? If keeping, see above post to Outlaw, if it's for sale/trade, hit me up!

I only hit one sale in the past few weeks(been MAJOR busy) so no big updates here in the GS thread but as soon as my card reader comes, I'll have some pics for my projects thread for you guys to see what's been shaking...

I spent $25, only haggled a few dollars off asking. Channel Lock 460s, Proto ball pein hammer, body hammer(no marking I can see yet but I plan to clean it up and check again), Ampco ball pein(either brass or beryllium), Snap On brake tool and big *** 1-1/8 or 1-1/4 combo wrench(my mind slips, I'll check size later) and a small Craftsman 2 jaw puller.

I use them for lighting old mobile home furnaces where the pilot is in the middle of the furnace. You gotta reach in about 12 inches and these telescoping clips get the lit match in where you need it.
